The Wall.

California has by far the largest number of unauthorized immigrants

Nancy Pelosi says it's the government responsibility to secure our borders. But she's against the wall. And she's been in the government how long now? What's her excuse?

Quite likely the fact that so many illegal aliens are "visa overstayers" rather than "walkers across the Southern border." It may also be, though I've not asked her to know for sure, that a good number of illegal aliens are willing to perform work that citizens and legal residents are not, as evidenced by the fact that such jobs existed prior to the illegals' arrival and went unfilled until the illegal immigrants agreed to accept/perform them.

I don't need them here or want them here.

Zero. Visas are issued by the federal government.

I cannot tell you how the 3M illegal aliens in CA came to the U.S. or how they come to currently be in CA.
  • Foreigners who overstay their visas outnumber those who cross the border illegally
  • 5 of the 19 September 11, 2001, hijackers were overstays.
  • The chart below depicts overstays in one year, 2015. About 45M people received visas to enter the U.S. in 2015. The data for it come from the study referenced in the last bullet in this list.

    FT_16.02.01_overstay_list.png

  • In January 2003, INS released an updated report that said 33 percent of the illegal immigrant population in 2000 had entered the country legally.
  • A 2004 report from the General Accounting Office, based on 2000 data, gave estimates on visa overstays ranging from 27 percent to 31 percent to 57 percent.
  • In a 2006 report, Pew estimated that "nearly half of all the unauthorized migrants now living in the United States entered the country legally through a port of entry such as an airport or a border crossing point where they were subject to inspection by immigration officials." While the source data gave an estimate that ranged from 33 percent to 50 percent, the report went middle-of-the-road and called it 45 percent.
  • The conservative National Review reported that in a paper published this year by the Center for Migration Studies, an expansionist outfit run by the Scalabrinian Catholic order that nonetheless does serious work. Co-authored by Robert Warren, head of statistics for the old INS, the paper finds that the share of overstays among new illegal aliens has been rising pretty steadily since the 1980s and surpassed border infiltrators in 2008. The paper’s most recent estimate is for 2012, when nearly 60 percent of new illegal immigrants are believed to have entered legally on some sort of visa (or visa-waiver status, if they’re from a developed country) and then just stayed on after their time expired.
  • DHS Reports Huge Number of Visitors Overstayed in 2015
A long-awaited report from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) confirms that overstays are a significant source of illegal immigration. The report identified just over 527,000 foreign visitors who apparently did not depart as required when their authorized stay expired in 2015. Approximately 484,000 were presumed to be still in the United States at the end of 2015, and 416,500 had not departed as of January 4, 2016. Of these overstaying visitors, 43 percent had entered on a business or tourist visa, 29 percent had entered under the controversial visa waiver program (VWP), and 28 percent had entered from Canada or Mexico.

The report's findings suggest that additional resources must be directed toward deterring and removing overstays. The Government Accountability Office has found that in recent years only 3 percent of the enforcement resources of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) were dedicated to addressing overstays, and only a small number (about 8,000) overstays are removed annually, out of a total estimated population of four to 5.5 million overstays in the United States.

One thing worth noting about the study: it doesn't consider land based entries, which account for 75% of people holding visas entering the country; thus the quantity of visa overstays is certain to be higher than that depicted in the study/report. How much higher? I don't know.

Trump's Wall isn't going to impede any such future visa overstaying illegal aliens from being in the U.S.

Done correctly, the wall will substantially reduce the number of illegals from south of the border, and I have not yet seen a substantial argument against building the wall. In 2006, the top Democrats said it would bring better security control to our borders.

As a senator, Barack Obama once offered measured praise for the border control legislation that would become the basis for one of Donald Trump’s first acts as president.

“The bill before us will certainly do some good,” Obama said on the Senate floor in October 2006. He praised the legislation, saying it would provide “better fences and better security along our borders” and would “help stem some of the tide of illegal immigration in this country.”

Obama was talking about the Secure Fence Act of 2006, legislation authorizing a barrier along the southern border passed into law with the support of 26 Democratic senators including party leaders like Hillary Clinton, Joe Biden, and Chuck Schumer.

In 2006, Democrats supported legislation to build border fence - The Boston Globe

The wall is pointless and will serve as nothing more than a symbol of the ugliness that has consumed many frightened Americans. The next President should run on tearing it down.
He will lose if he tries.

The wall is far from pointless. Your hatref for it us the proof.

A border wall is a gigantic waste of time and money. The government only controls about 30% of the land necessary. This will be tied up in court for a long time. A bit of advice. Don't mess with Texas.

By that standard an interstate highway is a gigantic waste of time and money.

Eminent domain cases of been in the courts for years. The defendants always lose. Authority to condemn land for public use is spelled out in the Constitution.

Illegal immigration across the southwest border is down more than 60 percent so far under President Trump, officials revealed Tuesday, even before the first new agent is hired or the first mile of his promised border wall is constructed.

Mr. Trump took a victory lap over the “record reductions” in illegal crossers, saying he is already saving Americans’ jobs by preventing them from having to compete with unauthorized workers.

“Down 61 percent since inauguration. Gen. Kelly is doing a fantastic job,” Mr. Trump told a labor union gathering in Washington, praising Homeland Security Secretary John F. Kelly, a retired Marine Corps general.

Mr. Kelly is scheduled to detail the numbers Wednesday to the Senate Homeland Security Committee, which is investigating the situation on the border.

Testifying to the committee in a first hearing Tuesday, former Border Patrol Chief David V. Aguilar said the percentage may be even higher than Mr. Trump teases. Compared with 2016, he said, apprehensions on the southwest border were down 67 percent through March.
