The Truth of the Civil Rights Struggle

You say he did not, then you say he voted for it. So he was against it before he was for it.

I can respond as long as the ellipsis is fairly done, which I did. Here it is again. "Barry Goldwater voted against Civil Rights." No he didn't. He voted against the 1964 bill. So did 34% of all Democrat Senators.

Hmmm . . . is Barry the father of John Kerry?

Besides, why don't you give us by % the voting of GOP senators and reps in South compared to their Dem peers. You already know, however, a GOP southern Rep or Senator voted against the bills in higher %s than did their Dem peers.

Academically objectively you certainly are not.

You are a hack.

The fact is simple. Barry Goldwater was playing politics, when he supported the Civil Rights legislation in 1957 and 1960 then voted against the Civil Rights Act in 1964.

To help the far right out, LBJ did not help it during the 1950s either, because he knew (1) it could not pass, (2) his enemies in the South would use it against him if they could, and (3) he was committed to pass it when the time that it could be passed.

LBJ got it passed in 1964, without Barry Goldwater. LBJ got the Voting Rights Act passed in 1965.

LBJ also got the GOP online with the legislation so that the issue became geographical more than it did party. Good for LBJ. Good for the Dems and the Pubs that voted in favor.

What has happened to my glorious GOP after Nixon, on civil rights? Not a good record at all.

The fact is simple. Jackal is playing without a full deck.

There is no doubt that until the Republican's civil rights battles proved successful, and blacks began to vote in numbers that surpassed the Democrat segregationists, they worked to suppress the black vote.

This is an example of segregationist Democrat icons:

1957- Democrat Sam Ervin, another liberal luminary, instrumental in the destruction of anti-communist Republicans Joe McCarthy and Richard Nixon, told his fellow segregationists, and who led the Watergate investigation, said of the 1957 civil rights bill: “We’ve got to give the goddamned ******* something. We’re not gonna be able to get out of here until we’ve got some kind of ****** bill.’ Robert Caro, “Master of the Senate: The Years of Lyndon Johnson,” xv.

Goldwater has a sterling record as an integrationist in his business, personal and political live....
...and with that record, it should be clear that his explanation of a questionable constitutional basis for the vote against one civil rights bill...having voted for several others, must be acquitted as correct.

Only the rabid, disingenuous Republican slanderers, like the Jackal, claim otherwise.

Prior to 1957, LBJ “had never supported civil rights legislation- any civil rights legislation. In the Senate and House alike, his record was an unbroken one of votes against every civil rights bill that had ever come to a vote: against voting rights bills; against bills that would have struck at job discrimination and at segregation in other areas of American life; even against bills that would have protected blacks from lynching.”
Robert Caro, “Master of the Senate: The Years of Lyndon Johnson, vol.3,” p. xv.

Democrats stopped every anti-lynching bill in the Senate...ever!

"On June 13, 2005, in a resolution sponsored by senators Mary Landrieu of Louisiana and George Allen of Virginia, together with 78 others, the US Senate formally apologized for its failure to enact this and other anti-lynching bills "when action was most needed."[3] From 1882-1968, "...nearly 200 anti-lynching bills were introduced in Congress, and three passed the House. Seven presidents between 1890 and 1952 petitioned Congress to pass a federal law."[3] None was approved by the Senate because of the powerful opposition of the Southern Democratic voting bloc"

Interesting....maybe you can point out where he said he lives and works in the black community

Or better yet you can cut and paste something totally unrelated

Look at poor wingy.....

...reduced to pretending he doesn't speak English.

Once again you fail to deliver

It is what happens when you substitute cut and paste for a good education

Poor wingy.....

....I see the effects of the anencephaly.

You're not able to grasp facts and documentation.

Wishing you a full and speedy recovery.

Her type of absolutist thinking is what got the far right and the libertarians in trouble in the first place: they believe they have all the answers, when in fact they don't understand the questions.

Questions?

In a weird aberration of the thought process, Liberals are unable to process questions such as:

a. You think not imprisoning criminals will lead to less crime?
b. You say that by paying women to have children out of wedlock, we’ll reduce the illegitimacy rate?
c. Are you sure that a guaranteed income will encourage people to work harder?

"Democrats today castigate Republican Senator Barry Goldwater as anti-black. However a review of Senator Barry Goldwater’s record shows that he was a Libertarian, not a racist. Goldwater was a member of the Arizona NAACP and was involved in desegregating the Arizona National Guard.

Goldwater also supported the Civil Rights Act of 1957 and the Civil Rights Act of 1960, as well as the constitutional amendment banning the poll tax. His opposition to the more comprehensive Civil Rights Act of 1964 was based on his libertarian views about government. Goldwater believed that the 1964 Act, as written, unconstitutionally extended the federal government's commerce power to private citizens, furthering the government’s efforts to "legislate morality" and restrict the rights of employers.

It is instructive to read the entire text of Goldwater's 1964 speech at the 28th Republican National Convention, accepting the nomination for president that is available from the Arizona Historical Foundation. By the end of his career, Goldwater was one of the most respected members of either party and was considered a stabilizing influence in the Senate. It is called revision, which is OK if you are faithful to the actual facts and the normative narrative.

But you won't, and you will be embarrassed as a result.

"On the urgent issue of civil rights, Senator Goldwater represents a philosophy that is morally indefensible and politically and socially suicidal. While not a racist himself, Mr. Goldwater articulates a philosophy which gives aid and comfort to the racists. His candidacy and philosophy will serve as an umbrella under which extremists of all stripes will stand. In light of these facts and because of my love for America, I have no alternative but to urge every Negro and every white person of good will to vote against Mr. Goldwater and to withdraw support from any Republican candidate that does not publicly disassociate himself from Senator Goldwater and his philosophy."

Well…. P.C is kicking some ass here, she doesn't need my help. I noticed all the clueless libs can come up with here is” Barry Goldwater” not much substance there. The main point here is the Republican party since its founding has supported civil rights for all people, the democrat party has always been the party of subjugation. True conservatives are for the liberty of all people. The Democrat party should just admit their horrible past and the terrible record on civil rights. The right for individuals to live free has never been part of their failed ideology.
