U.S. Uninsured Rate at 11.0%, Lowest in Eight-Year Trend

You're taking about covering 44 million people. Had the 19 states, almost all red states agreed to extended Medicaid, the percent uncovered would be at dropped 8% instead of 11%. The ACA is about far more than than just extending coverage. It guarantees that no one can be turned down for insurance because they are sick and once they have coverage it can't be cancelled because of illness. It allows young people to stay on the parents coverage to age 26. It provides over 60 free preventive services which have been shown in multiple studies to save lives. Through subsidies it makes health insurance affordable for those least able to pay.

The cost to insured is exaggerated. 85% of the insured get their insurance either through their employer, Medicaid, or Medicare. The average increase in premium paid by employees for health insurance over the last 3 years have been 3%, 4%, and 3.5%, approximately the amount of increase in healthcare provider costs. Costs for Medicare beneficiaries has gone up even less except for top 1%.

The 15% who buy individual insurance through the exchanges have seen the greatest increase in premium and deductibles. However those increase are not uniform. Those with low income are getting a significant discount. Those with higher incomes are getting no discount creating a huge outcry. In some areas the increases are no more than employer sponsored policies. In other areas, primary rural areas we have seen large increases. The reason for these increases are two fold, lack of companies expanding into less profitable areas and the increase in number seriously ill customers. Individual plans are the plans where we see very sick people signing up, people who are not working for health reasons such as bed ridden patients and patients whose healthcare expenses are in the hundreds of thousands a year if not more.

As the Republican healthcare plan rolls out, I think you'll see the problem with government just subsidizing those that don't have insurance. It can certainly be done by going to a single payer, but that's not going happen this time around.
