The Top 1%

But, you say Romney payed a couple million, which you seemed to indicate that proved the wealthy payed more than whatever it is you think that others do not think they pay... ... only the percentage makes any difference.
Only the percentage makes a difference if the total amount isn't a convenient for your feeble argument...
--or if you don't care about the deficit.

If the Republicans actually cared about the deficit, there's a very good chance that they would have a history of eliminating it. Except that such a history is non-existent. If it comes down to throwing out the poor with the bath water to reduce the deficit, I propose instead to throw out the so-called conservatives who currently rule that party. The country would be far better off.

Fast forward to today - capital gains taxes are at historic lows, the rich are getting richer while everyone else is getting poorer, the economy is lame, and unemployment is high.
Capital gains taxes have been as low as 7%, and they were 20% in the early 80s.

For the wealthy in 2013 they are 20% + 3.8% surcharge = 23.8% which given above would not be a historic low.

Also, everyone else isn't getting poorer.

Actually capital gains rates have been as low as zero recently (at least for families making under $80k or so). And before there were preferential rates for capital gains, there was an exclusion of 60% of LTCG from income.

Yup, cap gains and qualified divs are 0% as long as 15% bracket.

But we're talking about the wealthy. For the wealthy cap gains are 23.8%, which isn't a historic low.

I'll give you that they aren't the lowest, but they are at historic lows if you consider what they were, say, in the 1960s, when the U.S. economy was perhaps at it's strongest of the 20th century.

If the Republicans actually cared about the deficit...
--and the current Republican leadership doesn't seem to care any more than the current Democrat leadership. Big deal; it's not important. What's important here is whether WE care. We got a lot of voting choices coming up in 2014, and I'm voting for big spending cuts.

Us voters usually get what we want and deserve.

Nope. That's not it either.

Oh yes it is.

What is the biggest most powerful organization in the world?

Bingo...it is the US Government.

We can argue who controls the US government...and I agree that many wealthy connected special interests have much influence. However, government has the power to stop and control these special interest for the benefit of the American people. But, that aint goin to happen.

The total economic value of the U.S. is 54 trillion dollars. The U.S. government FY2012 tax revenues equals $2.45 trillion. The rest is privately held. The 1% holds over 40% of the remaining 51.65 trillion dollars. You can cut the U.S. government's budget to 0 and it wouldn't do a damn thing to solve the economic disparity. But then, the country would collapse, and we'd all be friggin poor.

I thought all are poor but the 1%?

did someone say that, or did you simply pull it out of your ass??
The point is that the wealthy, the 1% as a measurement, is receiving a larger and larger portion of the total revenue. And the middle class is seeing a smaller and smaller portion of the total revenue. Which is provable. You would only think otherwise if you refuse to look at the evidence. And the evidence is overwhelming.

Here it is after adjusting for inflation--

--ever since the 110th congress America's gotten poorer and DC's gotten richer.

Not only is Congress responsible for this. BO also holds much responsibility for it...and yet he is claimed to be a man of the people...and amazingly many Americans believe the propaganda.
