I'm from the South and have been stationed in upstate NY there were more racist up there then I ever met in Alabama and I was married to a Black women. Personal experience.

Political parties exist to consolidate power, not to represent ideologies. They may or may not found on the basis of one but soon devolve to self-perpetuation. And whatever ideology they flirt with, changes with the political winds of time. In the mid-19th century the conservatives were the Democrats and the radical Liberals were Republicans. The latter were the party of strong federal government while the former rallied for decentralization and "states rights".

Fun fact for what it's worth -- both the Democratic and Republican parties were organized by Abolitionists.

In the mid-19th century the Democratic Party was the conservative home of 'states rights' and limited federal government. The Republicans, founded 1854, absorbed the dying Whig Party (Lincoln was one) which believed in doing big things with federal government. So by this measure it was the Democrats interested in a "freedom from government intrusion".

There is no such thing as a political party anywhere that fixes on a single ideological spot and stays there regardless what happens in the world. That concept is as façile as it is ridiculous as it is unrealistic.

It also worked its political muscle to get Rice Means, Ed Jackson, Owen Brewster, Clarence Morley and Ben Paulen elected as Senators and Governors, plus dozens of city and local offices, as Republicans.
