There were only two Dixiecrats who ever ran for office -- Strom Thurmond and his running mate Fielding Wright. After failing to throw the 1948 election into the House, Wright finished his governor term and left office to practice law, and Thurmond served out his term and then had to run for his next re-election as write-in since the state Democratic Party had kicked him off the ballot. And they did that because he had endorsed Eisenhower.

Of course a dozen years later he became the first Southern Democrat to do the unthinkable and join the "Party of Lincoln", after he and his ilk didn't get their way trying to stop LBJ's Civil Rights Act. Running against the party establishment didn't work in 1948 (or in 1860), nor would it work in the future for Wallace.

Aprés lui, le déluge. LBJ is reported to have said "we (the Democratic Party) have lost the South for a generation". He was right but misunderestimated the time frame, or simply didn't predict that far. In a sense both Thurmond and Johnson had committed bold moves against tradition. But the combination did reset the political party equilibrium finally placing the conservative South in a political party it would have for decades been more comfortable in had it not been married to the emotional and hardheaded refusal to consider the Republican Party because in the Southern mind it still represented the 'invading' and occupying army of the Civil War.

That party switch actually took place not in 1964 but at the turn of the previous century when Democrats, the smaller-government "states rights" party of the conservatives, absorbed the Populist party and movement, bringing in constituencies of immigrants, minorities and women, while the Republican Party, originally the Abolitionist champions of Liberalism, took on the interests of the wealthy and corporations. Only decades later did the South catch up with that shift, spending the first half of the 20th century infighting the political party it was married to, unwilling to file for divorce. Johnson and Thurmond were the catalyst that finally forced the split.
