The leftwing knows that if its statist ideas are exposed to the sunlight of fair debate, they will will scuttle off like worms under a rock. Therefore, opposing viewpoints have to be suppressed whenever possible.
They've tried (and succeeded) on many fronts to suppress free speech and the communication of ideas in the last few decades.
- One of the most infamous is the "fairness doctrine" - an idea which basically would put people like Rush Limbaugh off the air, because nobody listens to lib radio. It would require equal time for lib and conservative viewpoints, but since no advertisers will be found for lib commentators, a radio station can't make any money off them, and would go out of business, or get rid of Rush. Of course, that's the whole idea. The leftwingers perennially try to bring this back from the dead.
- The Rico Act, designed to be used against the mafia, used to shutdown protests in front of abortion mills.
- Obama's effort to get more minority owners of FCC licenses. What's behind that is that if it's owned by a black, it's a pretty safe bet it won't carry Rush etc. They have tried all kinds of tricks like charging radio stations with not being "diverse", but letting them off the hook if they'll sell out to a minority for 75% of market value. When they've done that, the minority soon resells and pockets the profits.
- Hate crime legislation - this is used to give a criminal an extra penalty for what he thinks.
- University journalism schools. Have you ever read a university student paper? All liberalism all the time. Starting with the Dartmouth Review decades back, conservatives had to go off campus and publish their own paper to let any of their ideas see the light of day. Then when they distribute them on campus, leftwing brownshirts have come around trying to get all the copies and throw them away.
- Campus speech codes. If you're on a campus nowadays, better keep within the bounds of Pee See. Very ironic because originally the idea of universities was that they were a place where people were free to oppose establishment ideas - not any more.
- The "cleansing" of university humanities and social sciences departments, and law schools, of all faculty but the liberal/left. David Horowitz has written in depth about the fact that if you are a conservative, you need not apply to these departments whatever your credentials are.
- The new hollywood blacklist: if you're a conservative and work in the business, keep your mouth shut about your political ideas if you ever expect to work again.
- Currently, the anti-Muroch frenzy obviously has much of its steam from the leftwing hope that somehow, Fox News etc will be shut down, restoring "news" to the status quo ante of all liberalism all the time.
