And in 1985 there was no cable news, no internet, no conservative talk radio.
In other words in 1985 there were few ways for us to know about details such as this, and there was little or no way for us to discuss and pass information back and forth.
You simply cannot compare the two eras, and the way information flowed.
We had better access to news and the public was better informed back in those days. And we did have cable news in 1985. CNN, with Ted Turner in control, was way better than it is today. We also had c-span. There were radio talk shows, but they were more news oriented and conducted by actual news reporters who did a discussion show in addition to their normal news reporting job. It was usually more like a well known reporter delving deeper into stories through the us of interviewing people involved in the stories. Also, people read newspapers everyday as a daily routine. News magazines were popular also.
One should also remember that all the broadcast networks had big news departments with investigative reporters. Competition between the broadcast news organizations was fierce and local affiliate stations all had news departments and competed as well.
When a news group, TV or Print, got caught misrepresenting facts it became a big news story in and of itself. They couldn't afford to have a reputation of misreporting or sloppy reporting. The competitive nature of the business wouldn't allow it. So, we had print news competing with radio news and both competing with TV news. And the name of the game was accuracy and speed in getting the story out in front of the public before all the competition.
There were a few sources outside of broadcast news, and there was always the print media.
But the information flow was a fraction of what it is today, and there was no networking, no way the average person could create their own media as today.
You simply cannot compare the two times. The example that the OP gives for instance, was probably only known by a very small percentage of the population. Those that did know had vey few ways of expressing their concerns.
You could call your lawmakers, and maybe write a letter to the editor and it may have gotten published in your local paper, but today we trade ideas and information instantaneously, and we do it continually.
Those options simply were not available at that time. Had it been there would have been a lot of things that Reagan did for instance that would have caused outrage to his base.
I remember being absolutely beside myself with fury over his handling of the Marines killed in Lebannon.
The same with his amnesty, my family wanted to hang him by his testicles for that.
There was little way of expressing our outrage to thousands or millions of people like we can today.
And if he had missed the chance to bring Bergdahl home, they would have ripped him for that.
You must've missed the thread where Republicans complained that liberals dont blame Obama for anything. Thats where several liberals listed several complaints and challenged the righties to come up with one good thing about Obama for every complaint we had about Obama. http://www.usmessageboard.com/politics/360021-liberals-on-this-board-blame-obama-for-nothing.html
Needless to say the RW'ers came up with a good list like
1. He's a good father...maybe
2.
3.
See how projection works?
So you're not calling obama's decision shitty?
What Im saying is that you shouldnt be surprised liberals disagree with Obama on some issues thats called open mindedness. RW'ers disagree with Obama no matter what he does and are the true partisans.

Says the guy who didn't just say "obama fucked up" without 'ya but lookit what Reagan did!'
And fell just as soon a conservative chickenhawk frat flyboy drydrunk, more interested in pissing off Russians and Chinese than swatting "mosquitoes" sat his ass in the President's chair.
Boy oh boy that George W.
We hardly miss ye..
Blame Bush 8 months into his presidency, and 6 years into Obama's presidency.
Never.
Gets.
Old.
And you idiots blame Obama for shit that happened before he took office.

Its Bush's Fault.
