Maybe not exactly true of atheism, because atheists have nothing in common with each other that can be called religion.

However, the Catholic church did offer an olive branch to atheists when they accepted Darwinian evolution to be as acceptable as believing in creation.

Some atheists who needed to embrace Christianity because of some tragedy occurring in their lives, would have found the Catholic church the most acceptable of all the choices. Atheists could succumb to their need to be propped up by religion in their time of grief or suffering, without needing to compromise on the facts of Darwin's evolution!
