NATO was founded to guarantee freedom of the member states and specifically as a counter to the threat posed by Russia/ The Soviet Union. Is it a surprise they were ultimately rejected for membership in that organization, as they feared Russia might just want to dilute the goals and effectiveness of the organization, much in the same way antagonistic countries have diluted the effectiveness of the United Nations, to a basically useless organization?
