Because the whole Ukraine used to be part of the USSR, and that most of the eastern Ukraine was not part of the Ukraine until Khrushchev gave it to the Ukraine state in the 1950s.
Russia has been PAYING the Ukraine for the use of the Crimea, since 1991, and they should not have been paying anything.
Instead, the Ukraine should be paying Russia back for all the oil and gas they have been stealing since 1991.

When over 50% of the population wants to be in a different country, then that providence should be able to switch to that country.
