Syria To Be Bombed Within Days

Wow, WHAT a back-out.

This is an amazing development. Obama made strong case for war, but there is NO support in the country (and so presumably there wouldn't be support in Congress) for this war.

So I assume it's all over.

But we'll see.

he's totally doign the right thing.

this decision must be made by the representatives of the American people.

if the People say no, then we must not go.

Exactly, but isn't Congress still on their summer break? Legislation has to be carefully drafted in both the House and Senate, and the final language agreed between the two, before it can be called congressional authority. Given Congress's track record in getting anything controversial accomplished, how long do you think it will take for that to happen?

The President did suggest in his short speech that it would likely be quite some time. Meanwhile he's off the hook.

Who knows what he will do if Congress eventually does give him the authority and it is still deeply unpopular?

But let's hope Congress does look at ALL the pros and cons and likely and less likely consequences of military strikes, does the necessary homework so we'll know what the hell we are doing--Obama sure doesn't know--and what we do can be accepted as necessary and just by the American people.

I am sick to death of us giving our blood and treasure for futile causes.

So much for my prediction......

Boehner must have grown a pair of balls or something.

Nice rhyme. [:)

The TV is now saying that the Syrians are dancing in the streets and declaring victory!! They are saying they scared off the USA.

That's the other side of this coin and something the President will simply have to live with. All his initial bluster now coupled with what appears to be full retreat of course diminishes his stature, and ours, in the eyes of the world.

Nevertheless, for whatever motive, and whatever the consequences, he finally chose to make the right call.

Has anyone else noticed that we havn't heard diddly from Samantha Powers yet? Our activist pro-intervention UN Ambassador was MIA the entire week. A week where Obama and Kerry changed positions on something she has both strong opinions on, and is responsible for dealing with, at the UN.

I had to LOL when I saw this. It would be funnier if it wasn't partisan anti-GOP and had reflected Congress overall, because several of the Democrats have been as outspoken on this as have the Republicans. Kuchinich especially has been out-Pauling Ron Paul on this one.

And there was this back in July that received scant media attention:
Republicans and Democrats in the United States House of Representatives united last week to oppose Obama administration policies on meddling in the Syrian conflict and violating the privacy of citizens through pervasive collection of telephone records.

A vote on lethal aid to Syrian rebels and broader United States military intervention resulted in a slow down of lethal aid to Syrian rebels and restrictions on any use of U.S. troops in that nation’s civil war. The limiting amendment was attached to a Defense Department appropriations bill and passed by voice votes “with only scant dissent.”

Meanwhile, just watching reports from the "underground media", Israel is not happy with President Obama who they feel is putting them at higher risk with all his waffling on the Syrian crisis. Information is spotty on other world opinion, but I'm not finding much to compliment or admire Obama on blogs from either side of the ideological divide.

Reuters today:
. . . .French Interior Minister Manuel Valls said on Sunday that France will not launch an assault on Syria alone and will wait for the U.S. Congress to decide whether to act.

Obama also said on Saturday that he was comfortable with the idea of bypassing the "paralyzed" U.N. Security Council. . . .

. . . .Russia, backed by China, has used its veto power in the Security Council three times to block resolutions condemning Assad's government and threatening it with sanctions.

The United States has bypassed the United Nations in the past when the council was deadlocked, as in the case of the Kosovo war in 1999. At that time, Washington relied on NATO authorization for its bombing campaign.

The United Nations has received at least 14 reports of possible chemical weapons use in Syria. After months of diplomatic wrangling, Sellstrom's team arrived in Syria on August 18 with a 14-day mandate to visit the country.

The U.N. team was initially going to look into three incidents, but its priority became the August 21 attack. The inspectors have also been looking into Syrian allegations that the rebels used chemical weapons three times this month against the Syrian army - allegations that Washington has dismissed. Is there any conclusive proof that chemical weapons have been used? Is there any conclusive proof of what chemical weapons have been used other than what John Kerry has said? If they were used, is there any conclusive evidence of which side used them?

If both sides have used them, who do we discipline and how?

There is more than enough evidence that chemical weapons were used.

As far as WHO used them, I have yet to see any conclusive evidence. I personally believe that it was Assad. He is evil enough to use them. If he's crazy enough to drop bombs on his own people then he's crazy enough to use chemical weapons

Kerry just made an announcement after hair and blood samples indicated sarin gas in the first responders systems. These people must not watch the news channels.

what the fuck do hair samples have to do with WHO launched the attacks???

next you'll tell us that the Mossad intercepted Syrian military communications that included launch orders.

Is there? Then why is the U.N. as recently as yesterday reporting that they are still working to verify that chemical weapons were used and, if they were, what the nature of the chemicals were? Their own inspectors didn't have time to verify that before they were pulled out in case our own President decided to pull the trigger.

And your opinion of Assad might be right on, but it is not proof.

All of us have pretty strong opinions about all this, know who we like, who we don't, etc. But we need something more definitive than our prejudices and our personal convictions before we start killing people and blowing things up while putting our own people and others at risk when we do it.

When did the UN appoint Kerry to make findings about the alleged chemical weapons attacks?

Kerry's the Sec'y of State and no one tells him where to poop. Go back in your hole.

Kerry doesn't have a stellar track record of truthfulness himself, and he has a pretty good track record of embellishing and/or exaggerating the truth. And he has been known to completely flip flop on positions. We got to know him pretty well during his presidential campaign.

He may in fact be telling the truth this time and basing that truth on good information. I don't know that though. And neither do you. And we really do need more to go on that what he says before we commit our blood and treasure to what might be a fool's errand and an exercise in futility.

Here we go again. WWIII is just around the corner.
