Study: One-Third Of Manufacturing Workers Use Welfare Assistance

The study, conducted by the University of California, Berkeley, found that about one-third of manufacturing workers seek government assistance in the form of food stamps, healthcare subsidies, tax credits for the poor or other forms of welfare to offset low wages.

This amounts to about 2 million workers, and between 2009 and 2013, the cost for assisting these workers added up to $10.2 billion per year.

“The reality is the production jobs are increasingly coming to resemble fast-food or Walmart jobs,” Jacobs said.

By comparison, the number of fast-food workers who rely on public assistance is about 52 percent.

"I absolutely hate being on public assistance," she said. "You constantly have people judging you."

"The research found that the median wage for non-supervisory manufacturing jobs was $15.66 in 2013, while one-fourth of the workers were making $11.91, and many more make less."

This "report" has no date, but is tracking wages during the recession.

THAT IS WHAT REPUBLICANS AND CONSERVATIVES PUSH AS THEIR ECONOMIC PLAN. CUT TAXES.
I THINK WE SHOULD ALL GIVE UP AND FOLLOW THE POLICY SUGGESTED BY Reagan's Budget Director, David Stockman. In a New York Times article, Stockman said:

'When Fed chief Paul Volcker "crushed inflation" in the '80s we got a "solid economic rebound." But then "the new tax-cutters not only claimed victory for their supply-side strategy but hooked Republicans for good on the delusion that the economy will outgrow the deficit if plied with enough tax cuts." By 2009, they "reduced federal revenues to 15% of gross domestic product," lowest since the 1940s. Still today they're irrationally demanding an extension of those "unaffordable Bush tax cuts [that] would amount to a bankruptcy filing."
Recently Bush made matters far worse by "rarely vetoing a budget bill and engaging in two unfinanced foreign military adventures." Bush also gave in "on domestic spending cuts, signing into law $420 billion in nondefense appropriations, a 65% percent gain from the $260 billion he had inherited eight years earlier.""
Economic Affairs; DAVID STOCKMAN'S STORY

Republicans believe that spending is the only thing that increases the national debt. They have a mental block that does not allow them to see tax cuts as an equally effective method of increasing the national debt. Nor do they see that the biggest contributors to the national debt are Republicans. Which is basically what Stockman is saying.

Obama had Quantitative Easing, which was used at the rate of $85 billion PER MONTH. Next...

Is that what you think? Trade agreements cause that imbalance?

And yet, no USMB Republicans can focus their eyes on those words long enough to get their meaning.

Did you think that the president runs the Fed??? You would be wrong. The QE program was run by the FED. The president has no say.
So, quantitative easing is not printing money, but buying securities. That puts money into the system. Whether it was helpful is open to question.

As long as the dollar is loaded with all that worldwide reserve capital status, it will never adjust to make actual work pay domestically. But what really shafts American workers is the fact, that money can freely move from currency to currency and from geography to geography, but workers can't, workers are tied to the land like serfs. Which is why they get the same respect as serfs.

. But what really shafts American workers is:

1) 20 million illegals invited in to take their jobs

2) liberals taxes unions and deficits to drive 20 million jobs offshore

3) liberal attack on family schools and religion to render 20 million Americans unfit for work.
Yes, this is part of the picture. But the tide is much higher and much worse.

what could be worse than liberal programs directly eliminating 50 million jobs when the entire work force is only 140 million???????

Technology is what can be worse, and by the way, that's what the damned liberals ride too. They will do everything to stop workers from figuring out what else is possible apart from technology based centralization of everything. Yes, talking about cornering every market, including the commodity of labor. A total liberal aRtform, disasterous.

Technology is what can be worse,.
tech is very very good. its how we got from stone age to here. losing 50 million jobs thanks to liberal programs is as bad as it gets.
But is is technology that gives birth to liberal ideas. I think the biggest achievement of technology is how to enslave your neighbor. Most recently, buy eliminating his job and making him vote for whoever gives him the ne t welfare cheque.
