you are leaving out lots-----Roman culture was a kind of worship of --THE POWERFUL-----all "right" was in the hands of big time land owners and slave owners. Such people were so RIGHT---that they had the power of life and death over ALL THE PEOPLE in their households -----the "PATERFAMILIAS" was THE LAW----he could legally kill-----any of his children----and any of the slaves in the household.
