Ancient Confession Found: 'We Invented Jesus Christ'

Biblical scholars will be appearing at the 'Covert Messiah' Conference at Conway Hall in London on the 19th of October to present this controversial discovery to the British public.

American Biblical scholar Joseph Atwill will be appearing before the British public for the first time in London on the 19th of October to present a controversial new discovery: ancient confessions recently uncovered now prove, according to Atwill, that the New Testament was written by first-century Roman aristocrats and that they fabricated the entire story of Jesus Christ. His presentation will be part of a one-day symposium entitled "Covert Messiah" at Conway Hall in Holborn (full details can be found at

As an atheist, I am skeptical. When it comes to disproving religion, scholars of this type only care about the recognition. I doubt this is anything ground breaking.

And this is in politics?

This thread shows how utterly stupid some people are and I won't mention any names Mathew.

You'll find this book interesting if the above is of interest.

Of course it's all BS, all religion is man made!

So, if this turns out to be true, Islam was right after all. Jesus never preached he was God.

What difference will it make to Christians? None.

Atwill asserts that Christianity did not really begin as a religion, but a sophisticated government project, a kind of propaganda exercise used to pacify the subjects of the Roman Empire. "Jewish sects in Palestine at the time, who were waiting for a prophesied warrior Messiah, were a constant source of violent insurrection during the first century," he explains. "When the Romans had exhausted conventional means of quashing rebellion, they switched to psychological warfare. They surmised that the way to stop the spread of zealous Jewish missionary activity was to create a competing belief system. That's when the 'peaceful' Messiah story was invented. Instead of inspiring warfare, this Messiah urged turn-the-other-cheek pacifism and encouraged Jews to 'give onto Caesar' and pay their taxes to Rome."...

Atwill's most intriguing discovery came to him while he was studying "Wars of the Jews" by Josephus [the only surviving first-person historical account of first-century Judea] alongside the New Testament. "I started to notice a sequence of parallels between the two texts,"

I have read the Bible from cover to cover including the Apocrypha in seven English translations. I have read many books about the Bible. I have never heard of Joseph Atwill. I have not been able to find anything about him on the internet, other than this theory. In order to be taken seriously as a Biblical scholar one should have advanced degrees in Biblical studies from accredited universities, and one must be able to read the ancient languages.

I suspect that Joseph Atwill lacks these, and is trying for his fifteen minutes of fame. If he has manuscripts that seem to substantiate his claim these need to be scrutinized using carbon 14 testing, and linguistic analysis.

The assertion that Christianity began as a conspiracy to promote acceptance of Roman rule fails to explain why the Roman government persecuted Christianity as vigorously as it did. Roman persecution of Christianity began during the first century AD.

The similarities between the gospel stories and the account by Josephus simply confirms the accuracy of the gospels.

It's a bit dishonest to characterize it as if it was some sort of ancient manuscript discovered by a Brit equivalent of Indiana Jones. In fact the use of the word "confession" seems inappropriate. It's a theory postulated by an obscure Brit scholar who is about to become the darling (no doubt) of the anti-Christian bigots and the agnostic left.

I will be interested in seeing if Joseph Atwill has an authentic manuscript that appears to date to the first or second century AD. There are ways of dating manuscripts using carbon 14 dating, linguist analysis, and the kind of script used.

A portion of the Gospel of St. John has been found that scholars agree is from the first half of the second century AD.

The main flaw in his reasoning is that the ancient Romans persecuted Christianity. This persecution was somewhat out of character, because they tolerated other religions. By the first century educated Romans and Greeks were frequently skeptical of the Olympian pantheon of gods and goddesses.

The reason Romans persecuted Christianity was over a fairly simple matter. The Christians refused to burn incense to the Roman emperor. The Jews did not either, but they were given an exemption dating back to the time of Alexander the Great.

Because burning incense to the emperor was so important, an effort by Romans to fabricate a religion fostering submission to Rome would clearly include the injunction to burn incense to the emperor.

The gospels frequently have Jesus arguing with the pharisees. In addition, Jesus is frequently shown worshiping in synagogues. A conspiracy to fabricate a religion would have passages in the gospels where Jesus tried to burn incense in a synagogue, and was forbidden to do so by pharisees.

In addition, crucifixion was a Roman method of execution. Stoning was a Jewish method of execution. Gospels written with the goal of encouraging submission to Rome would have Jesus stoned to death, despite Roman efforts to save his life.

Not at all. I'm an athiest, and as far as I am concerned, Atwill is just trying to drum up sales of a book that he will soon be selling (no doubt). It's all BS.

Right now it is October 19, 2013. What happened? I just checked BBC. If Atwill had anything faith shattering there would have been a news story about it.
