Women boost Obama over Romney in new ABC poll

An ABC News/Washington Post poll released Tuesday shows female voters play a significant role in President Barack Obama's current lead over Mitt Romney among 2012 voters.

Obama led Romney 57 to 38 percent among registered female voters surveyed, the president's largest margin among women to date, according to Langer Research Associates (pdf), which produced the April 5-8 poll for ABC.

Obama tested best among all voters on his ability to handle "women's issues," leading Romney by 19 points. And women alone did not account for the margin: Obama held a 10-point lead on women's issues among men surveyed. Among women surveyed, the president's lead on women's issues was 27 points.

White women specifically shifted towards Obama since that March poll.

Here's where it stands.

The GOP talks about the Democrats waging class warfare. It doesn't get much traction. Not surprising since so many people are out of work. The unemployed and their families aren't particularly inclined to feel sympathy for wealthy people whose main concerns aren't anywhere near as immediate or pressing as their own.

So, when the birth control issue hit the fan, the GOP insisted that the Democrats were waging a war on religion. It got a little bit of traction, but not all that much considering that the whole issue was more hype than reality.

As a consequence of the birth control controversy (and a lot of Republicans stepping up to offer a dismissive opinion about womens issues), Democrats started saying that Republicans were waging <sigh> a WAR against women. And guess what happened? It's gotten a LOT of traction.

And now Republicans are crying foul?
