Apparently a socialist city council member in Seattle doesn't pay taxes on her employees........typical....

Seattle socialist Kshama Sawant avoids taxes The Daily Caller

Kshama Sawant, a socialist and a member of the Seattle, Wash. City Council, is paying no fewer than five campaign staff employees as independent contractors — thus evading the payment of payroll taxes, overtime, social security and other insurance.

The avowed protector of workers from the evils of capitalist exploitation has spent $12,000 paying her employees so far as she fights for reelection, according to KIRO Radio.

“Sawant has been skirting the rules by not paying into the public workers’ safety net,” Josh Feit of state political blog PubliCola explained, according to KIRO.

The socialist does not appear to have provided any benefits to her five employees beyond cash payments for services provided.

Local paper up here doesn't pay but 4 full time employees.

All of the carriers, reporters, writers, editors, and folks that actually run the printing presses and stuff are all "independent contractors."

So, are the private contractors being given 1099 forms? If so, it's completely legal. I work as a private subcontactor myself. It is not the responsibility of an employer to pay tax, rather, it is the responsibility of the employee to report all taxes, but the taxes are still getting paid, regardless.

It is not a good idea to not hand out 1099, because in that case, the employer must pay. All the taxes themselves.

*Private contractors are not subject to unemployment benefits. Thus, there is no workers comp for them to collect or for the business to provide as a mandatory condition of employment.

Right, but the gist of the argument is that employer's are avoiding paying taxes, benefits, and so forth because they just proclaim all their employee's as contracted/self-employed.

This is a correct argument, they do use that loophole to cut their costs. though I'm not sure I agree that it's only socialist's :p

the point is socialists demand that people pay higher taxes...on everything...and that the rich pay even more......and here you have a socialist who isn't paying taxes she could be paying....she has decided to not pay taxes...even though she advocates for lots of taxes.....

I agree with you on the point of "other peoples money" but I do not agree with it being wrong for anyone to use legal methods to lower their employment costs.

I don't mind either........except......when you bitch and moan about other people not paying their fair share.....and that taxes are too low..........and that businesses don't pay their people enough....or pay benefits.........just like she is doing.....

The hypocrisy is certainly high, though unfortunately that's pretty much this country has devolved into. :/
