And many come through the southern border as well as other points of entry. We became a slovenly and selfish people and we suffer the results of it now even as we live better then the past to some extent.

It is not part of any official mandate by the USA, the Constitution, Declaration or anything. It's not even part of the Statue of Liberty! In fact, after written, it was practically forgotten.

However, nothing wrong with the poor, the tired, the masses, even the refuse, so long as they come here LEGALLY, and go through the process to become legal US citizens and pass muster. Also, a lot has changed since 1885; back then we were in great need of immigrants. Today, not so much. 11 million illegals and untold legal ones and I think we're pretty good.
