The Democratic Party is America's Party of historic racism and now race baiting. The name is a national embarrassment and should be changed in my opinion.

-------------------------------------

A Short History of Democrats, Republicans, and Racism
The following are a few basic historical facts that every American should know.

Fact: The Republican Party was founded primarily to oppose slavery, and Republicans eventually abolished slavery. The Democratic Party fought them and tried to maintain and expand slavery. The 13th Amendment, abolishing slavery, passed in 1865 with 100% Republican support but only 23% Democrat support in congress.

Why is this indisputable fact so rarely mentioned? PBS documentaries about slavery and the Civil War barely mention it, for example. One can certainly argue that the parties have changed in 150 years (more about that below), but that does not change the historical fact that it was the Democrats who supported slavery and the Republicans who opposed it. And that indisputable fact should not be airbrushed out for fear that it will tarnish the modern Democratic Party.

Had the positions of the parties been the opposite, and the Democrats had fought the Republicans to end slavery, the historical party roles would no doubt be repeated incessantly in these documentaries. Funny how that works.

Fact: During the Civil War era, the "Radical Republicans" were given that name because they wanted to not only end slavery but also to endow the freed slaves with full citizenship, equality, and rights.

Yes, that was indeed a radical idea at the time!

Fact: Lincoln's Vice President, Andrew Johnson, was a strongly pro-Union (but also pro-slavery) Democrat who had been chosen by Lincoln as a compromise running mate to attract Democrats. After Lincoln was assassinated, Johnson thwarted Republican efforts in Congress to recognize the civil rights of the freed slaves, and Southern Democrats continued to thwart any such efforts for close to a century.

Fact: The 14th Amendment, giving full citizenship to freed slaves, passed in 1868 with 94% Republican support and 0% Democrat support in congress. The 15th Amendment, giving freed slaves the right to vote, passed in 1870 with 100% Republican support and 0% Democrat support in congress.

Regardless of what has happened since then, shouldn't we be grateful to the Republicans for these Amendments to the Constitution? And shouldn't we remember which party stood for freedom and which party fiercely opposed it?

Fact: The Ku Klux Klan was originally and primarily an arm of the Southern Democratic Party. Its mission was to terrorize freed slaves and "ni**er-loving" (their words) Republicans who sympathized with them.

Why is this fact conveniently omitted in so many popular histories and depictions of the KKK, including PBS documentaries? Had the KKK been founded by Republicans, that fact would no doubt be repeated constantly on those shows.

Fact: In the 1950s, President Eisenhower, a Republican, integrated the US military and promoted civil rights for minorities. Eisenhower pushed through the Civil Rights Act of 1957. One of Eisenhower's primary political opponents on civil rights prior to 1957 was none other than Lyndon Johnson, then the Democratic Senate Majority Leader. LBJ had voted the straight segregationist line until he changed his position and supported the 1957 Act.

Fact: The historic Civil Rights Act of 1964 was supported by a higher percentage of Republicans than Democrats in both houses of Congress. In the House, 80 percent of the Republicans and 63 percent of the Democrats voted in favor. In the Senate, 82 percent of the Republicans and 69 percent of the Democrats voted for it.

Fact: Contrary to popular misconception, the parties never "switched" on racism. The Democrats just switched from overt racism to a subversive strategy of getting blacks as dependent as possible on government to secure their votes. At the same time, they began a cynical smear campaign to label anyone who opposes their devious strategy as greedy racists.

A Short History of Democrats Republicans and Racism

Fact: The Ku Klux Klan was originally and primarily an arm of the Southern Democratic Party. Its mission was to terrorize freed slaves and "ni**er-loving" (their words) Republicans who sympathized with them.

Bull Shit.

The Klan was founded by six young bored Confederate veterans (Christmas Day 1865, Pulaski, Tennessee) as a lark. It was a college-prank-level social club having nothing to do with politics, or racism. That's exactly why it has the goofy K-alliterations of kleagles and klaverns and such.

Simultaneously in those months after the Civil War there sprang up vigilate violence from insurgents intent on continuing the war, which operated both individually and in semi-organized groups. The White League, the Knights of the White Camellia and others committed terrorism on the newly-freed slaves and the (what they viewed as) occupying agents of the North. This element quickly infiltrated the Klan.

In 1867, looking for a status of 'legitimacy', the Klan elected Nathan Bedford Forrest, a highly-regarded war general, as its figurehead. But in less than two years Forrest decided these infiltrating elements described above had gotten completely out of hand and in January 1869 issued a proclamation disbanding the Klan, which was then just three years old.

The vigilante element that had taken the mantle ignored the order and continued their terrorism into the 1870s until federal crackdown, and the failure of Reconstruction, drove it out of existence.

For 35 years there was no Klan. It was a thing of the past. It would have been another obscure historical footnote along with the White League and its ilk, had it not been for William Simmons, a gullible Georgia salesman. Simmons, upon seeing the film "Birth of a Nation", took it on himself to re-organize the Klan (after all, he saw it in the movies) and took some disciples up Stone Mountain where they burned a cross and founded the second Klan (the burning cross bit was an affectation from the movie, not from the historical original Klan). And that is the Klan we know from recent history.

William Simmons also had no known political affiliation and was never a politician.

Fact: The historic Civil Rights Act of 1964 was supported by a higher percentage of Republicans than Democrats in both houses of Congress.

And that's more bullshit. Once again, facts trump revisionism. Here are the numbers:

The original House version:
  • Southern Democrats: 7–87 (7–93%)
  • Southern Republicans: 0–10 (0–100%)
  • >>> ALL SOUTHERNERS: 7-97 (6.7%--93.3%)

  • Northern Democrats: 145–9 (94 – 6%)
  • Northern Republicans: 138–24 (85 – 15%)
  • >>> ALL NORTHERNERS: 283-33 (89.6%--11.4%)
The Senate version:
  • Southern Democrats: 1–20 (5–95%)
  • Southern Republicans: 0–1 (0–100%)
  • Northern Democrats: 45–1 (98–2%)
  • Northern Republicans: 27–5 (84–16%)
  • ALL SOUTHERNERS: 1--21 (4.5%--95.5%)
  • ALL NORTHERNERS: 72--6 (92.3%--7.7%)

I've got 94% of Democrats and 85% of Republicans. What do you get?

And as noted a million times before on this site to the obtuse like yourself, 94-85 is not significant. It's clear the contrast is geographic. And that means cultural.

South: both Dems and Repubs are agin' it. Everywhere else: both Dems and Repubs are for it.

Dumb shit.

But wait! There's more. NOW how much would you pay?

Fact: In the 1950s, President Eisenhower, a Republican, integrated the US military

That would be Harry Truman, a Democrat. Executive Order 9981, July 1948. Look it the fuck up.

It's one of the reasons the Southern contingent walked out of the party convention in 1948 and ran their own candidate. Eisenhower wasn't even elected until 1952.

That 1948 renegade candidate would be Strom Thurmond, the guy Trent Lott lost his leadership position over after fumbling a remark on Thurmond's 100th birthday. It was neither the first time nor the last some contingent of Southern Democrat bolted and ran on their own against the DP. The last would be 1972 with George Wallace. The first would be 1860, when the Southerners disrupted the convention, walked out and ran their own candidates, which is why neither Lincoln (R) nor Douglas (D) won a single Southern electoral vote in the election that set the table for the Civil War.

Correct. The South was, is, and always has been a bastion of racism and bigotry. It was primarily Democrat. It is primarily Republican. It has always been primarily conservative.

And shouldn't we remember which party stood for freedom and which party fiercely opposed it?

And shouldn't you remember that political parties exist for one purpose, which is to acquire power, and not to represent an ideology?

150 years ago the Liberals were the Republicans. They were also the party of "big government" and the very first attempts at "Affirmative Action" to the newly-freed slaves. In other words cretins like you with your endless whining about "da eebul liburruls and big gummint" would have been Democrats. To imagine these two parties resemble where they stood 150 years ago is pure pristine ignorance.

Correct. The South was, is, and always has been a bastion of racism and bigotry. It was primarily Democrat. It is primarily Republican. It has always been primarily conservative.

Exactly, and the numbers above SCREAM that point.

When the Civil War started the Republican Party was just six years old. Lincoln's name didn't even appear on the ballots of ten Southern states (and the Democrat still lost them all) but of course the war soon followed the election, secessions coming even before Lincoln's inauguration, and the war became everybody's focus. When the dust had settled the South had been vanquished and humiliated in a war it expected to win, its entire economy ripped to shreds, and vast numbers of people out of work and out of food, with vast numbers of breadwinners not coming home. That wasn't an environment where Lincoln and his party were going to get a whole lotta love.

Consequently for 99 years most everybody in the South was a Democrat. Whether you were a racist or not, you were a Democrat, because it was the only game in town. And if you wanted to run for undersecretary of the assistant to the dogcatcher, you had two choices -- either you ran as a Democrat, or you lost.

Strom Thurmond became the guy to break the 99-year ice and do the unthinkable when he switched to Republican in 1964, having failed in his tantrum to stop the CRA. Within a generation the sea change was done, and what was a "Solid South" in blue was now a Solid South in red.

Same people, same conservatives, and where applicable -- same racists.

Political parties shift with the winds. Cultures don't.

Poor Pogo, same crap different day.....I doubt you read the link also....

The use of term, "Democratic Party" will always be an embarrassment to the nation, far far worse than any flag that they fought for slavery under could ever be. I know you're desperate to change history but sorry it can't be done and taken seriously.

I've supplied you with a link on the Democratic Parties first President and slave owner... 1829-1837

(I suppose we could also include the extermination of the Indian Nations in America to the Democratic Party at this point also.)

I suspect the Democratic Racist Party didn't just suddenly appear the day of his election, do you?

That name is the same as that southern flag. Southern Democrats hated blacks and killed them. The name is a symbol of hatred and inexcusable behavior. Did you see the picture of Clinton explaining that the blue star on his state's flag was in honor of the confederacy? Shameful. Why would they even want to be associated with that name?
