He went to court and the jury and the law found him liable for defamation. The purpose of the lawsuit and monetary damages beyond the harm his defamatory statements caused, is to compel Trump to stop his defamation. The lawyers for Carroll used Trump's own claims about his wealth and examples of his continued defamation of Carroll while the trial for damages was going on, as reasons for why the penalty needed to be that high in order to compel someone like Trump, with the resources he has, to desist with his defamation.
