Shots In Sarajevo

Back in 2000 or thereabouts when they were pickiing 'man of the century' for the 20th century my choice was Princip on the grounds that no one man singlehandedly did more to set the course of the entire century than he did with that single act.

It's true.

It also goes to show you that one man can do much evil. Likewise, one man can cause much good.

My vote for man of this next century is Obama, no single human being has done so much to bring Conservatism back from the almost dead. Thanks Berry, you are one hell of a man! :D

June 28, 1914.

Archduke Ferdinand and his wife Sophie are killed when a Serb Nationalist Gavrilo Princip shoot them.

November 11, 1918

Europe is at peace (some what).

September Hitler Invades Poland.

So much for peace.

September of 1939.

It looks like you have WWI and WWII a bit confused.

That was about 20 years of relative European "peace."

Well that's pretty much the way social avalanches happen, isn't it?

Tension mounts and mounts up and then something minor (and yes, assassinations of political leadership were so common back that I think it fair to call the assassination of Ferdinand and Sofia a minor event) start the wehrmacht rolling.

Europe had been preparing for a war for decades before WWI broke out.

And it is not entirely unreasonable, I think, to see WWII as little more than ROUND 2 of WWI.

I was going to say, Hitler invaded Poland in 1918?

In Banja Luka,
We don't have no second floor...
I lived upstairs from you
Yes I think you've seen me before

If you hear something late at night
Some kind of trouble. some kind of fight
Just don't ask me what it was
Just don't ask me what it was
Just don't ask me what it was

I had a professor in college who called 1914-1945 one single war.

He was correct for the most part.

The 1920s were mainly peacefull.

But there was aggression and outright war all over the place in the1930s - starting with Japans invasion of Manchuria in 1931.

Never in human history have so many countries WANTED war so much as in 1914.

Probably the most avoidable, unnecessary, pointless major conflict of all time.

Hitler invaded Poland 25 years after the Archduke was assassinated.

Nope.

The First World War Ended November 11, 1918. Both of my Grand Father's served. My Mohter's Father was gassed. My Father's Father, due to a strong "German Sounding" last name served in the U.S. Army at what was then Camp Lee (Now Fort Lee) Virigina.

The rise of Facsim in Europe (Germany and Italy). The recognition of the Soviet Union. Wars in the Balkans. The Spanish Civil, which became a Proxy War between Facist Countries Germany and Italy and the Communist Soviet Union.

The "Relative" Peace you refer to did not exist.

Germany Invades Poland in 1939.

My Father served in WWII. First action was at a place called Guadalcanal. His last action was Okinawa.

I strongly recommend to all USMB'ers the wonderful book:

"Cumshots in Sarajevo: the history of Bosnia-Herzegovina's porn industry"

The Serbs were staunch US allies during WW2 when times were tough and the majority of Croats and Muslems in Yugoslavia supported the Nazi regime. The political climate has always been complicated in Yugoslavia until the 1990's when the president of the United States lied to Americans about a sexual relationship. Next thing you know innocent civilians in suits and briefcases in the cosmopolitan city of Belgrade are running for their lives while American bombers are systematically destroying their infrastructure.

The relative peace absolutely did exist.

To say otherwise is to ignore history.

Someday, you might want to do some math and figure out for us all how many years fell in between November of 1918 and September of 1939.

Thanks for playing.

Nineteen Years Ten Months - Time between the First and Second World War.

You play with numbers all you want, I look at Europe after WWI and still content that " " means exactly that...but "Relative" to what is the question.

Wars in Balkan after the collapse of Ottoman Empire.

The Proxy War between Facist Powers Italy/Germany and Communist Soviet Union.

"Relative" No.
