Sea ice extent now the third lowest on record

Now this is changing the subject:

Sea levels set to rise as Arctic warming replaces millennia long natural cooling cycle

(09/03/2009) According to a new study published in Science the Arctic should be cooling, and in fact has been cooling for millennia. But beginning in 1900 Arctic summer temperatures began rising until the mid-1990s when the cooling trend was completely overcome. Researchers fear that this sudden up-tick in temperatures could lead to rising sea levels threatening coastal cities and islands. "Scientists have known for a while that the current period of warming was preceded by a long-term cooling trend," said lead author Darrell Kaufman of Northern Arizona University. "But our reconstruction quantifies the cooling with greater certainty than ever before."

From his post we see that warming of the poles began as early as 1900 and has continued since. Yet man made global warming is claimed to have only started recently. Seeing as there was no general warming trend till the 80's for the last century.

So much for the claim that all the CO2 is doing it.

Faulty logic.

There is causality here that is increasing with every passing day, but CO2 is not the only factor involved in the earth's temperature. There is the sun.

But now the sun is at its lowest level of activity in 80 years, and the earth is continuing to warm.

Atmospheric circulation patterns in August helped spread out sea ice, slowing ice loss in most regions of the Arctic. NSIDC scientists expect to see the minimum ice extent for the year in the next few weeks. While this year's minimum ice extent will probably not reach the record low of 2007, it remains well below normal: average ice extent for August 2009 was the third-lowest in the satellite record. Ice extent has now fallen below the 2005 minimum, previously the third-lowest extent in the satellite record.

Arctic Sea Ice News & Analysis

Third lowest in 30 years, so what? No one has records before the 70's when the satellites went up, now do they? No way, for example to know what the ice was like through the 1920's to 1940's when temperatures were even warmer in those regions. No way to know what the ice was like during the time Greenland was nearly ice free either.

Once again a 30 year record means nothing. As your buddy Rock just posted the region has been warmiong since at least 1900. We have no records for that 100 years at all.

Summer sea ice likely to disappear in the Arctic by 2015

(08/31/2009) If current melting trends continue, the Arctic Ocean is likely to be free of summer sea ice by 2015, according to research presented at a conference organized by the National Space Institute at Technical University of Denmark, the Danish Meteorological Institute and the Greenland Climate Center.

The Arctic Sea Ice Extent was very low in 2007. That extent increased in 2008 and has increased again for 2009.

The "current" trend is that ice is increasing. Their thesis is that if the current increase continues, then there won't be any at all.

Interesting bit of deductive reasoning.

Interesting bit of stupidity. The volume of ice continues to decline.

Yes, those dullards at the NSIDC just can't seem to keep up with your brilliance on this topic. You need to write them a letter and get them straightened out.

Cannot you differeniate volume from coverage? The volume of ice in 2008 was less than that in 2007. When they calculate the ice volume for 2009, I am sure that it will be less than that of 2008, even though it was spread out more.

And, for the first time, large freighters made the North East Passage. And don't give me that Amundsen story again. There is a bit of a differance in a freighter carrying 1300 tons of construction equiptment making the passage in weeks, and a 87 ton herring boat making it in three years.

6% per decade.

And the sun is at its lowest level of activity in 80 years.

Maybe that explains why we are in the third consecutive year of Arctic Sea Ice Extent increase.

This year was still more than two deveition points below the twenty year average. And, while the coverage was greater than in 2008 and 2007, it was thinner, and the overall volume is less.

FRANKFURT, Germany – Two German ships have traversed the fabled Northeast Passage, having arrived in Siberia from South Korea by travelling around Russia's Arctic coast line. Global warming and melting ice made the journey possible.

Now the German-owned ships are poised to complete their journey through the cold waters where icebergs abound, heading for Rotterdam in the Netherlands with 3,500 tons of construction parts.

The merchant ships MV Beluga Fraternity and MV Beluga Foresight arrived this week in Yamburg, Siberia, their owner Beluga Shipping GmbH said Friday. They travelled from Ulsan, South Korea, in late July to Siberia by way of the Northeast Passage, a sea lane that, in years past, was avoided because of its heavy ice floes.

Scientists report that the Arctic Ocean ice cap has been shrinking to unprecedented levels in recent summers, because of global warming, opening up many passages that were ice-choked in earlier times.

In July, new NASA satellite measurements showed that sea ice in the Arctic was not just shrinking in area, but thinning dramatically.

Niels Stolberg, the president of Beluga, which is based in the German city of Bremen, called it the first time a Western shipping company successfully transited the Northeast Passage.

Who the hell cares about a 20 year average? How old is the earth again? Trying to make predictions based on 20 years of observed data for the planet is so beyond not scientific as to be laughable. That any credible scientist would use a 20 year period to make long term claims about the climate is hilarious and proves they are either idiots or liars or both.
