The six candidates in the Feb. 22 election differ on whether an educator should be in charge of the nation's third-largest district and how the school board should be selected. They also offer their own visions for how to spur better test scores and reduce the dropout rate.

The leadership of the schools emerged as a campaign issue after a coalition led by the Chicago Teachers Union suggested changes to the 1995 state law that put control in Daley's hands, giving him the power to appoint the board.

At or near the top of the new superintendent's to-do list will be improving student achievement. Some 80 percent of the city's schools didn't meet federal testing targets last year.

---------------

While parents play a significant role in their children's education, Chico said they often lack the resources and knowledge to help their children succeed. Chico said he would create a "parent academy" for every school to serve as a networking, resource and education center for parents.

Why do American children have to be dragged down because the third world can't keep up?

That is a serious question!

? Did you link the wrong article? I don't see any of that in the link. It was about changing the way officials gain their seats because of their failure. What does that have to do with your posts at all?

These mayoral candidates are just babbling. There is nothing new in their approach because they don't address the fact that some races are slower than others. You'll never make Jose into a rocket scientist because you keep dragging him back into the third world everytime he comes home. No kid will ever advance that way. Take that same kid and put him in a home with real Americans and his chances of success are 10 times better.

No, he's just being racist. This isn't the first thread he's started like this.

Somehow, because the candidate is Latino, he must be trying to bring Chicago schools down to "third world" levels. Or something.

Honestly, I have no idea what he's talking about. But there's a few other threads just like this one.

So your idea of education is to have half way decent student's education be held up on the students who can't speak English? That's the "third world" Americans are talking about.
