U.S. Awash In Oil

When you look at the whole picture, it turns out that there are vast supplies of oil in the U.S., according to various government reports. Among them:

At least 86 billion barrels of oil in the Outer Continental Shelf yet to be discovered, according to the government's Bureau of Ocean Energy Management.

About 24 billion barrels in shale deposits in the lower 48 states, according to EIA.

Up to 2 billion barrels of oil in shale deposits in Alaska's North Slope, says the U.S. Geological Survey.

Up to 12 billion barrels in ANWR, according to the USGS.

As much as 19 billion barrels in the Utah tar sands, according to the Bureau of Land Management.

Then, there's the massive Green River Formation in Wyoming, which according to the USGS contains a stunning 1.4 trillion barrels of oil shale — a type of oil released from sedimentary rock after it's heated.

The Myth Of Scarce Oil

all speculation until it is extracted from the ground.

Shale oil is problematic to extract at best.

Kinda like ethanol takes about as much energy to extract as the finished product yields.

Wow, your link makes it sound so easy. Too bad about reality stepping in. Every notice how facts and reality always seem to fuck up right wing schemes?

Gas Price Facts: Domestic Oil Production Is At Eight-Year High | ThinkProgress

Looks like we have drilled more oil under Obama than we did under Bush and still gas prices are going up. Go figure.

As international tensions and Wall Street speculation move the national gas price average closer to $4, Republicans have charged that Obama is “intentionally” raising prices.

attacks that claim we’re “not expanding our domestic energy capacity” like Cornyn’s “couldn’t be more misguided.”

With gas price misinformation everywhere, a few facts on oil production stand out:

– Under the Obama administration, domestic energy production is at its highest level in eight years.

– The U.S. has more oil and natural gas drilling rigs than the rest of the world. The number of rigs have exploded in the past three years to 1,272.

– “After declining to levels not seen since the 1940s, U.S. crude production began rising again in 2009,” writes the Houston Chronicle.

– The Energy Department confirmed yesterday that the U.S. exported more oil-product than imported for the first time since 1949.

– The five oil giants benefited from $200 million more profit for every penny rise in quarterly gas prices. Yet the industry still benefits from $40 billion in subsidies.

Clearly, we’re producing more oil:

:cuckoo: You idiot the federal government makes more money off oil than oil companies do and oil production is up in spite of Obama previous permits and private land drilling, nothing to do with Obama

How do you have a serious discussion with idiots like this. Facts scare them.

There is currently a huge lease play going on in Illinois for shale liquids drilling rights.

What is a lease play? It's when a lot of different companies from all around the U.S. send their legal teams to this state's county courthouses so they can pour over deed records.
Their goal is to aquire the drilling rights on tens of thousands of acres of land.

Are we happy about this? Fuck yes we are. These people are paying landowners (predominantly farmers) hundreds of dollars per acre for the right to drill- for shale oil and natural gas liquids. And if a producing well results, those same landowners may very well become millionairs.

For the state of Illinois-potentially tens of millions of dollars annually flowing into tax coffers, millions of dollars flowing into communities through property taxes (oil and gas production in Illinois is taxed as real property), corporate taxes, income taxes...

It's a boom in the making.

If this is so "problematic" then why all the fuss, Guss?

One natural gas well in NE pa produced enough gas for 40k homes in the last 3 months, thats just one of many, and ya know it just flows up out of the ground, and the real neat thing, there is a whole bunch of recoverable oil down there also.

The YES WE CAN crowd shouting NO WE CAN"T

Oil and gas exploration isn't regulated to just the right wing.

You should get together with Chris, sell your car, stop heating your house, get the heck of the internet your using energy and put your money where your mouth is.

If we let people like this one run things we would still be eating raw meat and shitiing in a ditch.

and it will do nothing to drop the price of oil but will just enrich the oil companies.

Of course Obama is a liar so are all the other politicians.
Anyone who promises 2-2.50 gas is also lying.
Bush promised to build more refineries.

good point,we have much father to go. all this new production is on private land Obamma gets no credit for that,I will give him credit for promoting Natural gas exploration in is SOU speech.

There is absolutely no reason not to develop every resource we have.

Coming from a guy who probably voted for Snyder?

And someone who voted for Bush, McCain, Palin and would vote for Perry, Bachmann, Cain, Trump, Santorum, Newt or Romney?

Who gives a shit what you think. I got in trouble being honest about how I feel about people like you, so I'll just say piss off.

provide need jobs, taxes the left loves taxes, more independence, even if the price never drops,at least our money stays at home, needed jobs, oh and needed jobs.

Gas leases were last running around 6k and acre in NE Pa new york has chosen to deprive properties owners of millions and millions of dollars that are badly needed.

Did oil companies become "enriched" in 1999 when that commodity fell to $10/barrel and gasoline was 60 cents/gallon? What did that fuck puke of a President Clinton do then?
Jack Shit. The result? Hundreds of oil companies went out of business, tens of thousands of industry workers lost their jobs, domestic oil production dropped.

"Enriched". That's rich. U.S. oil companies (95% of which are independent- NOT "Big Oil") reinvest 100% of their net profits back into.... the oil business. And why wouldn't they?
If they didn't, then they would soon be out of... business.

But I agree with you- anyone who promises lower gasoline prices is not only a liar, they are stupidly misinformed.

More refineries? FERGEDDABOUDIT!

Gas drilling is down becuase the price of nat gas is way down.
The nat gas drillers are choosing not to drill.
So if we pay more for nat gas the landowners benefit and the rest of us pay?
Somehow the law of supply and demand works for nat gas but not for oil?
could it be because nat gas cannot be exported easially without liquification, an expensive process?
