How he is still alive I have no idea, especially in the wake of the recent hunting down of conservatives in the GOP Congress and in Las Vegas.

The only reason I can think of is the 1,400 federal, state and local benefits that married people enjoy. Other than that, I see no reason to ask the gov't permission to publically honor your relationship with the one you love.
