Rick Scott's police state

Yesterday, our Toad in Chief vetoed all kinds of programs that were popular: vets programs, whooping cough vaccines for the poor, etc....not unexpected but I thought this was very telling. I'm pretty sure these people are seniors that were strong armed out of a public place (The Villages is a Senior Community, I believe)

Members of The Villages Democratic Club were barred from the budget signing by Scott staffers who said the outdoor event in The Villages town square was “private.” Other staffers and Republican operatives scoured the crowd and had Sumter County sheriff’s deputies remove those with anti-Scott signs or liberal-looking pins and buttons. They escorted more than a dozen people off the property.

Barring the public? I thought you were talking about an Obama town hall meeting.

Or the Black Panthers.. :eusa_whistle:

It loses its "private" property status when the Governor elects to use that land as a platform upon which he conducts the PUBLIC's business, BriPat.

Its a nice legalistic rationalization to hold a PUBLIC press conferences on private land so you can eliminate the public you don't want there.

But its unethical and an affront to the concept of this democratic republic to play that game.

It does not. The owners of the property do not loose their property rights simply because they allow the governor to use it for something they think is important.

That said, I again reiterate that Scott's staff was wrong for excluding people from the event. I already said that, but if I do not say it again someone will think I am defending him.

If the governor wants to hold a partisan rally or any other private affair on private land with a private guest list, paid for with private resources, he has my blessing.

The signing of the state budget hardly qualifies as private. As a citizen of Florida, I am politically offended.

There. Fixed it for me.

Dismal record. Spin it how you like, but the position is "Chief Financial Officer" and these are state finances being mismanaged.

It is not spin. You are grossly misinformed regarding the Florida state pension fund.

Florida's CFO oversees the state's accounting and auditing functions and unclaimed property, monitors the investment of state funds and manages the deferred compensation program and risk management program for the state.

I'm just listening to a robocall from Governor Toad.

He's telling me he is awesome and how cutting funding for schools helps schools.

Jebus.
Yes, let us keep increasing funding to schools because solving problems by throwing money at them has always worked.
Student performance begins at the home where parents instill the value of a good education into their children. Parents are responsible with teaching their children that learning is important to their future successes, that failure will not be tolerated, and bad behavior will not be excused. If these things were held sacred by every parent we would not be pouring billions of new money into ideas that to date simply do not work without the parents doing their work first.

Yeah, unfortunately this is what Scott has been doing.

He is giving the very public impression that he is the governor of the Florida Tea Party, not Florida.
Yes.

I am not sure that the sheriff's department acted properly in following his orders. If I lived in that county I think I'd file a lawsuit.

Of course you would. You Lefties are always availing yourselves of the civil courts in an attempt to get paid.
WAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!! I'm suing!
Oh puuhhhhleeeeze.

They can't handle dissent..

They woulda ate that guy alive, had the police not been there.

We've seen 'em threatening to kick people out over questions about medicare.. Blocking certain members of the media out of public news conferences.. And now this..

BTW, isn't Rick Scott the guy that wants to make drug tests madatory for anyone on food stamps (he has a stake in the company they would buy the testing kits from :|), but is against having a database of drug users (oxycottin and the like)?.. And now this bill, aimed at the poor of Florida?.. This guy worships at the altar of corporatism.. And Floridans don't like it; as evidenced by his dismal approval ratings.
Rick Scott is the guy that wants to profit off of drug testing people that work for the state or receive benefits.

Anyway, I have done a little research, and the Villages is a disney-esque retirement village that is privately owned and enjoys huge tax breaks.

So while Governor Toad could keep the general public from attending his event he cannot, IMO, keep residents of the Villages from attending. But that is what he did, with the help of the sheriff's office.
Adn why don't you post the reasons why The Villages receives these alleged tax breaks?
Could it be because the community is self contained and provides it's own security and utilities thus costing the state and county less in service related expenses? Nahh, we will just shout TAX BREAKS and the let the chips fall where they may...Of course you Lefties hate gated secure communities.

I've spent most of my career around pension funds and know the Florida pension plan extremely well. The CFO is one of three trustees of the pension plan and does NOT make investment decisions, which you don't want anyways. The CFO has no extra authority over the plan than the other two trustees. In fact, the governor has the most control since the governor can veto the selection of the Executive Director, which the CFO cannot. And for the record, when the cash pool imploded, the Executive Director at the time was originally appointed by Jeb Bush.

A three-member Board of Trustees governs the SBA:

Rick Scott , Governor, as Chairman
Jeff Atwater , Chief Financial Officer, as Treasurer
Pam Bondi , Attorney General, as Secretary

The Trustees have ultimate authority and oversight for the SBA’s overall strategy. The Trustees led the SBA’s adoption of Investment Protection Principles in an effort to protect Florida’s investments.

The Trustees delegate authority to the Executive Director, who serves at the discretion of the Trustees and is responsible for managing and directing all administrative, personnel, budgeting, investment policy and investment functions.

Trustees

While financial specialists at the SBA handle day-to-day operations, the agency is governed by a three-member Board of Trustees, which includes Florida’s elected governor, chief financial officer and attorney general.
