No republican ever said that a man who cheated on his wife should be prohibited from holding office. Democrats made it up and attributed it to republicans, but republicans never said it.

What you propose is that any democrat, no matter how criminal, no matter how abysmal prior performance was, is more acceptable that someone who had cheated on his wife, BUT had also done a very good job while in office.

When Sanford went on his infamous hike down the Appalachian trail in Argentina, he and his wife had already been separated for awhile. It wasn't even adultery. It was a marriage that had fallen apart and each party had gone their separate ways, the legalities to be dealt with in time.
