Scientists Report First Cure of HIV In A Child, Say It's A Game-Changer : Shots - Health News : NPR

Scientists believe a little girl born with HIV has been cured of the infection.
She's the first child and only the second person in the world known to have been cured since the virus touched off a global pandemic nearly 32 years ago.
Doctors aren't releasing the child's name, but we know she was born in Mississippi and is now 2 ½ years old – and healthy. Scientists presented details of the case on Sunday at a scientific conference in Atlanta.
The case has big implications. While fewer than 130 such children are born each year in the U.S., an estimated 330,000 children around the world get infected with HIV at or around birth every year, most of them in sub-Saharan Africa.

This oughta make novasteve happy. Unless he finds out the baby is gay or a liberal.

A baby born with the virus that causes AIDS appears to have been cured, scientists announced Sunday, describing the case of a child from Mississippi who's now 2 1/2 and has been off medication for about a year with no signs of infection.

There's no guarantee the child will remain healthy, although sophisticated testing uncovered just traces of the virus' genetic material still lingering. If so, it would mark only the world's second reported cure.

Specialists say Sunday's announcement, at a major AIDS meeting in Atlanta, offers promising clues for efforts to eliminate HIV infection in children, especially in AIDS-plagued African countries where too many babies are born with the virus.

They're hoping, but they've still got tests to run.

Me personally? I hope it works out. Curing AIDS would be as much a boon for mankind as curing polio was, maybe even more.

That's great news for the child.

But I wish the medical community would have put the same money and effort into curing diabetes and cancer.

Instead of working to cure fudge packers disease......... :doubt:

Really SunnIdiot?

Do you even know how disease and cure research works?

Apparently not.......................

Finding a cure for AIDS was politically motivated and has nothing to do with public safety.

Besides, AIDS can be totally prevented.

Whereas, other diseases just happen to people.

And those types of diseases are the ones science needs to be working on.

You really are quite the clueless idiot, aren't you?

Guess that "Islam" thing got in the way of your Christian teachings, didn't it?

Or........................the quick answer is that your bigoted view of the world is coloring how you view advances in medicine, isn't it?

Its good to know innocent kids could possibly be cured.

Such meds and theropy shouldn't be wasted on those who could of prevented getting the disease by not having unprotected homo sex.

Matthew 7:1 "Judge not, that you be not judged."

Luke 6:37 "Do not judge, and you will not be judged. Do not condemn, and you will not be condemned. Forgive, and you will be forgiven.

Romans 14:10 You, then, why do you judge your brother? Or why do you look down on your brother? For we will all stand before God's judgment seat.

So we pick and choose which (human) HIV victims we treat/cure????

If there is limited resources for making a "cure" then yes, someone would have to eventually choose.

I would think babies born with it would be first, but perhaps some people think adults who brought on the disease with their own idiotic actions should get preferential treatment.
