Currently in vouge among defenders of the Bush regime is the attempt to portay Obama as being in step with the Bush Administration because of the retention of the rendition policy in hopes of legitimizing Bush's use of 'extraordinary rendition'.

The two terms are notably different. Rendition is in fact a tool that has been used by the United States in the past when criminal suspects have fled to countries which have no extradition treaties with the US, or sometimes in cases where there are treaties but for one reason or another the country in question will not extradite the criminal suspect.

'Extrordinary rendition' however is the use of rendition to capture persons, not for criminal trial in the US, but for the relocation to countries which use torture in interogations. It's use is a violation of international laws and treaties which the US has ratified.

Rendition = legitimate. Extraordinary rendition = illegal.

Started in the US by Bubba, not Chimpy.

Still want to persue this path partison boi?

What was started by Clinton?

Sorry if you see everything in partisan terms. I don't and am only pointing out the facts.

Pursuing the facts, this is a bad thing?

Clinton used rendition a great deal...Sandy Berger was quoted bragging about it to the news media saying that foreign jailers had a way of getting more intelligence from a prisoner than we could get from someone in US custody....his little joke....

Thats just the facts of the matter.....

“Former CIA analyst Michael Scheuer, the architect of the rendition program under Bill Clinton, said what many Democrats know but would rather not hear: that when it comes to sending people to face torture in other countries, the Clinton administration may be as vulnerable to indictment as the Bush administration.”

Rendition is the use of bounty hunters. Technically not legal out side the US, though it has been used historically.

Extraordinary rendition and irregular rendition are terms used to describe the apprehension and extrajudicial transfer of a person from one state to another.[1] "Torture by proxy" is used by some critics to describe situations in which the United States has purportedly transferred suspected terrorists to countries known to employ harsh interrogation techniques that may rise to the level of torture. It has been alleged that torture has been employed with the knowledge or acquiescence of the United States (a transfer of anyone to anywhere for the purpose of torture is a violation of U.S. law). Condoleezza Rice, (then the United States Secretary of State), stated in an April 2006 radio interview that the United States does not transfer people to places where it is known they will be tortured.[1][2][3]

The US program prompted several official investigations in Europe into alleged secret detentions and unlawful inter-state transfers involving Council of Europe member states. June 2006 report from the Council of Europe estimated 100 people had been kidnapped by the United States' Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) on EU territory (with the cooperation of Council of Europe members), and rendered to other countries, often after having transited through secret detention centers ("black sites") used by the CIA, some sited in Europe. According to the separate European Parliament report of February 2007, the CIA has conducted 1,245 flights, many of them to destinations where suspects could face torture, in violation of article 3 of the United Nations Convention Against Torture.[4] A large majority of the European Union Parliament endorsed the report's conclusion that many member states tolerated illegal actions of the CIA and criticized several European governments and intelligence agencies for their unwillingness to cooperate with the investigation.

Extraordinary rendition is an invention of the Bush Admin. for the purpose of torturing prisoners.

Wow... isn't it cool how the idiots declare something to be illegal and never QUITE get around to citing a well reasoned argument which would provide the basis for such a law to even exist; let alone a statute which provides that such is illegal

"Extrordinary Rendition" is not used to capture anyone... it's a myth snatched from the ideological ether to rationalize around the simple fact that rendition is a long established diplomatic tool, used by every administration in modern history...
