It is as well a continent as it is a short form for a country on this continent - for the United States of the continent America. That's not very important. In Germany a single prisoner has to have 10.75 sq-yard or more. When more people are together in a cell then it have to be 8.33 sq-yard or more. This is nearly 100 foot^2 for a single prisoner and about 75 foot^2 per prisoner who share a cell.
