This teacher is using a well known and effective technique educators use; get their attention. Shock them into thinking about ideas, social problems, political problems, etc. He is a good teacher, not a bad teacher. That people cannot recognize this for the satire it is: that's a concern; it seems your intellectual development is somehow lacking.

He is a Russian Communist. It is very disturbing he is being permitted to urge his white American male students to commit suicide. It says on the Wikepedia that he was raised in Philadelphia so I am guessing he was born in Russia. The wording is kind of vague. I also found this on Wikipedia:
