Multiple labs are confirming the relative simple method that was discovered BY ACCIDENT at ORNLabs recently. And that is a copper-carbon nanotube design that converts CO2 to ethanol. Although the results were unexpected, it's now one of the hottest topics in the effort to do "carbon sequestration" from fixed site power power plants, like coal and nat gas.

Instead of injecting the CO2 output from these plants into the ground to make "soda pop" --- this technology could turn the GreenHouse stack emission into a useful fuel for transportation. Or even put it back on the grid as "stored electricity".

Interesting how all of sudden, the possibilities to reduce greenhouse emissions from burning fossil fuels just got brighter.

Silly ass. If the use it for fuel, the end result is that the carbon still gets put into the atmosphere as CO2.

The hell with it. We don't need coal, shut all the mining down, and this nation will be better for it. Especially now that the orange clown has made destruction of watersheds legal. Since you support the orange clown, don't ever say again that you oppose pollution.

Not really the use of coal and its emissions have been a major source of new products for over a century. oil and coal are really great chemical stock.

Then why are we propping up and MANDATING ethanol as an alternative transportation fuel and starving half the world of consumable crops? In the big picture, using the CO2 TWICE before emitting it -- is FAR BETTER than using it once. But don't let the math frustrate you..

If you notice from the press releases of all this work --- it's fine if the resultant ethanol is used to power turbines to "fill in the randomness of wind and solar". A STRANGE statement since the feed crop for this idea is a lot of concentrated CO2 emissions from coal plants. But of course, a fanatic like you will deep six the idea BECAUSE the feedstock for this "battery for renewables" is fossil fuel emissions. Completely nihilistic and unsophisticated view of the potentials here.

They HAVE to say it's for enhancing wind/solar -- their research grants DEPEND on that deception right now. But in truth ---- it's made possible by the CO2 byproduct of fossil fuel combustion.. .

I have no problem with oil and coal being used as an industrial stock. That would take far, far less of each than is being presently produced to be burned in our atmosphere.

We have heard the litany from our 'Conservatives' here that they are against pollution. Now here they are, applauding one of the dirtiest pollution sources in the US.

That addresses the cleanup at the site of generation, does not address the filth created in mining the coal.

All of the past 'clean coal' processes have turned out to be expensive boondoggles, creative ways to suck up taxpayer money.

Next time will be different. Really it will. We just need government to subsidize 'clean coal' some more, and all will become unicorns and rainbows.

Interesting, how some people have become such fervent socialists.

If EPA would allow coal plants to do partial repairs and updates without DEMANDING full compliance with the BS CO2 rules --- coal plants would ALL be cleaner today in terms of real pollution. But in order to get a permit to do maintenance and upgrades, they have to come out of it in full compliance with the mandates.

If that'll reduce the need for food for fuel I'm all for it. But only if it's in a really big way

EV's have no need of ethanol for fuel. Problem solved.

The wife has one and it doesn't need ethanol or hummingbird hearts. When you motor down the street in your EV flacaltenn, does it really use hummingbird hearts, or are you just making things up because you've never owned one and are just speaking from a position of ignorance on their use?

Really? So what "fuel" does it run on? And where does your utility company get that fuel?? If this isn't clear to you -- It might VERY WELL come from hummingbird hearts.. BILLIONS of them...

:p

More likely from the "Clean" fuels that have a safety record/kwh that make a Chernobyl style reactor look safe.
