To me, the sensible solution is to narrow down public education into a short list of what it can and cannot teach.

Honestly, I think that civics and economics would be the very last things I'd want being taught in government run schools, bones.

We're 34 trillion dollars in debt and government is thoroughly corrupted and in shambles.

Public education has proven itself to be irredeemable. The states should try a new paradigm that allows citizens to band together and hire their own teaching professionals. The indoctrination would be severely curtailed and the kids would be MUCH better able to make their way in a complex world.
I've seen programs being tested that allow several families to join together and "crowdfund" teachers who would work in different home settings. Think of it as homeschooling with a professional doing the instruction.

Mainly because the testing is skewed. Many other countries only continue education to the best students, and they only test the best of those. We educate everyone; usually through high school. We test ALL of those students. We also offer education to students with special needs that other countries wouldn't. Our test results include their results as well. And of course, teaching someone something doesn't mean they are going to be good at it. When I was a kid, a very good tennis player spent a lot of time teaching me how to play tennis. After an entire summer, I still sucked at it. YOU can't even write a proper sentence.
