The anti-gun loons do not want the current court to decide - any- gun control cases -- this is why NY changed the law the USSC took up on appeal.

And here's where I'd be suspicious of NYC government. If SCOTUS decides the case is now moot and won't review it, will NYC suddenly change the law back a short time later?
