GAZA CITY, Palestinian Territories (AFP) – Two out of eight Hamas prisoners who broke out of a Cairo prison as a wave of anti-government protests swept Egypt arrived back in Gaza on Sunday, an official source said.

A senior official in the Hamas government confirmed all eight were on their way back to Gaza, with the report also confirmed by one of the escapees.

By Sunday morning, at least two of the prisoners who had been held in Abu Zaabal prison, northeast of Cairo, had made it back to Gaza, entering the strip through the tunnels which run under the border, a Palestinian official said on condition of anonymity.

RAMALLAH, (PIC)-- Palestinians crowd TV sets to tune in on the latest in nationwide protests demanding the ousting of longtime Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak.

Many who our correspondents met with said outcomes in Egypt will have an impact on the West Bank and Gaza Strip, not only because of the geographical proximity, but also because of political ties.

A curse from Gaza

"What is happening to the Egyptian regime is a curse from inaction with the suffering of the Palestinians in Gaza," said Abu Maheeb, a West Bank shop owner.

"The siege, hunger and death brought to the Gaza Strip by the regime is being recompensed at the hands of the Egyptians," he added.

"What is happening is an answer to the prayers of widows and orphans who have been left homeless by the regime's ban on construction materials and medicines."

"The removal of the regime will remove the tragedy and siege of Gaza, Allah willing."

An accomplice in abductions

Umm Khaldoon, whose son had been sentenced to years in PA security prisons, expressed joy over the Egyptian protests.

"The Egyptian regime played a major role in supporting the PA security militias, which have abducted and tortured our people," she said.

"The regime backed the resolve of the Abbas authority and militias when brokering reconciliation issues during disputes between Fatah and Hamas," she said.

"The end of the unjust regime in Egypt will accelerate the end of the Abbas authority and militias," she went on to say.

Already discredited by the extent of its collaboration and capitulation exposed in the Palestine Papers, the PA will be weakened even further. With no credible "peace process" to justify its continued "security coordination" with Israel, or even its very existence, the countdown may well begin for the PA's implosion. Even the US and EU support for the repressive PA police-state-in-the-making may no longer be politically tenable. Hamas may be the immediate beneficiary, but not necessarily in the long term. For the first time in years we are seeing broad mass movements that, while they include Islamists, are not necessarily dominated or controlled by them.

There is also a demonstration effect for Palestinians: the endurance of the Tunisian and Egyptian regimes has been based on the perception that they were strong, as well as their ability to terrorize parts of their populations and co-opt others. The relative ease with which Tunisians threw off their dictator, and the speed with which Egypt, and perhaps Yemen, seem to be going down the same road, may well send a message to Palestinians that neither Israel's nor the PA's security forces are as indomitable as they appear. Indeed, Israel's "deterrence" already took a huge blow from its failure to defeat Hizballah in Lebanon in 2006, and Hamas in Gaza during the winter 2008-09 attacks.

As for Abbas's PA, never has so much international donor money been spent on a security force with such poor results. The open secret is that without the Israeli military occupying the West Bank and besieging Gaza (with the Mubarak regime's help), Abbas and his praetorian guard would have fallen long ago. Built on the foundations of a fraudulent peace process, the US, EU and Israel with the support of the decrepit Arab regimes now under threat by their own people, have constructed a Palestinian house of cards that is unlikely to remain standing much longer.

Watch Out for Falling Drivel

"We are in the middle of a political earthquake in the Arab world and the ground has still not stopped shaking. To make predictions when events are so fluid is risky, but there is no doubt that the uprising in Egypt -- however it ends -- will have a dramatic impact across the region and within Palestine.

"If the Mubarak regime falls, and is replaced by one less tied to Israel and the United States, Israel will be a big loser. As Aluf Benn commented in the Israeli daily Haaretz, 'The fading power of Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak's government leaves Israel in a state of strategic distress.

"'Without Mubarak, Israel is left with almost no friends in the Middle East; last year, Israel saw its alliance with Turkey collapse' ('Without Egypt, Israel will be left with no friends in Mideast,' 29 January 2011)."

Drivel is, indeed, falling from that intifada garbage dump.

You may not be concerned but Israel is.

Israeli analysts fear Islamic takeover in Egypt

JERUSALEM (AFP) – Israel's leaders anxiously watched events in Egypt on Sunday as analysts warned that if a new leadership was dominated by Islamists it could threaten 30 years of peace between the two neighbours.

As the wave of unprecedented protests continued to engulf Egypt, Israeli officials have been nervously eyeing developments and assessing the likely impact on ties.

"We are attentively following what is going on in Egypt and in our region," Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Sunday after holding late-night talks with US President Barack Obama and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.

GAZA, (PIC)-- As expected, the current wave of revolution in the Arab world is moving towards the Palestinian territories mainly the West Bank.

Activists have launched a campaign on Facebook demanding the removal of the West Bank-ruling Fatah Authority and Palestine Liberation Organization. PA chief Mahmoud Abbas is taking threats seriously.

Inspired by protests in Egypt and Tunisia that ousted the president, the campaign says it is fed up with the concessions made on Palestinian land and rights and persecution of resistance fighters.

"The Palestinians have completely lost trust in the Fatah movement who threw itself into the arms of Israel and became a tool for security coordination and murder of Palestinian citizens and execution of American policies in the region," the site says.

Oh, so it's all the Jews' fault.:gives:

pffffft

The last issue on Earth I'm concerned with is a bunch of terrorists' rights.

Things could get really hot in GAZA and Israel if the government that takes power after Mubaraks regime goes down is hostile toward the WEST.

I don't actually think that's why the people of Egypt are in the streets though.

I think they're just sick to death of the corruption of the Mubarak regime.

Now if the (largely USA armed and supported) Egptian Army turns against the USA and the WEST then there's likely to be a serious problem.

Were I running the CIA right now I'd be desperately trying to encourage the least radical Egyptians involved with these demonstrations into power.

It IS possible, I think, to see this regime go down, only to be replaced by an Egyptian government that is not going to significantly change its foreign policies.

IF, that is, we don't make the mistake of openly taking sides and supporting the Mubarak regime.

Its a real titerope walk though, I'll grant you that.

Robert Fisk has lived in Beirut since 1976. He has a Ph.D in Political Science and "holds more British and International Journalism awards than any other foreign correspondent."

His January 26, 2011 column posits a new truth dawning on the Arab world:

"The Palestine Papers are as damning as the Balfour Declaration. The Palestinian 'Authority' - one has to put this word in quotation marks - was prepared, and is prepared to give up the 'right of return' of perhaps seven million refugees to what is now Israel for a "state" that may be only 10 per cent (at most) of British mandate Palestine.

"And as these dreadful papers are revealed, the Egyptian people are calling for the downfall of President Mubarak, and the Lebanese are appointing a prime minister who will supply the Hezbollah...

"Rarely has the Arab world seen anything like this..."

Fisk goes on to link recent events in Tunisia, Egypt and Palestine:

"But across the Arab world - and this does not mean the Muslim world - there is now an understanding of truth that there has not been before..."

Looking ahead"

"And so where are we going? Could it be, perhaps, that the Arab world is going to choose its own leaders?

"Could it be that we are going to see a new Arab world which is not controlled by the West?

"When Tunisia announced that it was free, Mrs Hillary Clinton was silent. It was the crackpot President of Iran who said that he was happy to see a free country.

"Why was this?

Be careful what you wish for dumb ass! If (or when) Abbas falls and if (or when) the West Bank becomes Gaza. Expect a war that will expel the Palestinians. The Gazanians will be pushed to Egypt and the West Bankians will be pushed to Jordan, Lebanon and Syria. There will be threats of nuclear attack to any invading army and the regimes surrounding Israel (including Iran) will do little except bitch. Same with Europe!

Don't forget Belgium, Golda.

"...interbank transfer instructions are conducted through the Society for Worldwide Interbank Financial Telecommunication (SWIFT), which is based in Belgium. So, instead of New York -- as in the period when sanctions were applied on South Africa--

"Belgium is now the pressure point.

Or ground zero.

Slave.

I don't think any government Egypt may have is going to attack Israel. However, Israel receives a lot of support from Egypt that will probably evaporate.

Egypt supports Israel's legitimacy and that would turn 180 with any government of the people. Egypt props up Abbas and his illegal government in the West Bank. That will go away. Of the most important is the siege on Gaza. Israel's siege would collapse if Egypt opens the borders to travel, trade, and tourism.

What would happen if an elected Palestinian government exercises sovereignty over a part of its territory? That is the only remaining excuse not to recognize Palestine as a state.

Tinmore its easy for you to say you want regimes like Abbas and Mubarak to fall because you don't live in those countries and you won't be subject to the Islamic law the people will be put under.

Abbas's illegitimate government spies on it citizens without court issued warrants. It arrests people who have broken no law and without court issued warrants. It holds people indefinitely without charge, trial, (in a real court) or legal representation. It tortures people and several have been tortured to death. All this is in direct violation of their constitution.

This is what Egypt supports. Do you?
