Orion!

These Scientific facts wont go away regardless of what technology is developed to get people to Mars.
The question still remains is there a real need to go to Mars?! It is a dead planet, and there will be nothing to
gain from going there or sending people there to risk their lives for what purpose?
It is a insane waste of money and possible lives all this mission to Mars lunacy and insanity.
There are more important issues right here on the Earth that need to be addressed, lets get to them
and stop all this insane fantasy talk about a mission to a dead cold radiated lifeless Mars!!

Feels like a giant step backward flying capsules again. The really sad part is that it will be another seven years before American Astronauts will be launched into space in it.

The capsule is the best design for re-entry. This thing will be coming home waaaay faster than the old Apollo missions because of how much faster it will need to gonto make it to and from mars. Re-entry with that speed will involved temperatures hotter than the surface of the sun. There's a reason the Apollo capsule and this one are shaped this way and that's because it is the best design for distributing heat and maneuvering.

If you want a whole new design you'll be waiting 60 years instead of just 7.

Google-- debates about mission to Mars or --Google" feasibility about mission to Mars" , and you will begin
to see what all the problems this mars mission insanity has.

Google--> mission to Mars problems and get back to me all you pro Mars people.!!?

Problems are there to be solved. People do not want to go to Mars because it's easy but rather because it is the greatest achievable challenge out there right now.

At least one person gets it!!

The first shuttle, Columbia, was launched on 12 April 1981 and if NASA had their stuff together they would have been well on their way to designing the next deep space vehicle. Let's face it they had 30 plus years to design one yet they failed,.

True but at the same time their budget was absolutely nothing compared to the Apollo days. Even today their budget is that of a country that thinks going to Mars is a joke.

60 years? LOL! There were dozens of better designs that have been proposed over the last 30 years.

Here is what we need to do if we're serious about space exploration
1. Fund Eon Musk rocket landing idea. This will make getting to space 1/10th to 1/100th the current price in the long term if successful.

2. Build a planetary ship. Fuck building HUGE missiles and Appolo modules for missions further than the moon.

This ship needs to be able to
-Be used for years and for many missions
-Be able to refuel
-Be able to support at least a handfall of crew members to mars, etc.
-Be able to feed them.
-And to be able to support a landing craft to get to the surface and back.

I understand that this proposal would be expensive up front, but in the long term it will allow humanity to have full planetary capabilities and a strong foothold in space. This ship will allow many missions and long term settlement of mars. Everything else is a joke.

3. Thousands of high paid jobs and the dreams of millions of children dreaming of taking their place. Want to create high paying jobs? This is one way to do it.

4. If not mars and you need a more economic reason....Why not the asteroids? Like in mining for the metals we are in need of??? Earth certainly isn't the end of the line for them. ;)

Okay Mr. Space Engineer. :cuckoo:

Some of you people still don't get it!?. Once people get to Mars , if they make it there alive, you can not colonize
Mars without a decent supply of oxygen, which they would run out of in a matter of weeks. Half the probes sent
to mars did not make it there, they went off into deep space.!. The space radiation is so high that any extended exposure will kill you, there is no ozone layer on Mars!!. Then there would not be enough food and water for the duration of
the mission , it would just be to heavy to transport in the space craft.!!

I'm glad you're not one of the people working on the mission. Or any space mission for that matter.

What the hell do you mean?, I am telling you any Mars mission will be suicide for the astronauts and a huge waste of money.!
You people need to give up on all this Mars mission fantasy! it will never work, its a guaranteed death sentence
for the mission crew!!.

Thousands of years ago there were people just like you who said that about leaving the cave, crossing the mountains, crossing the ocean, building a flying machine, and going to the moon.

It took the human race 66 years to go from inventing the first airplane that flew for 12 seconds to landing on the moon. That's absolutely remarkable. The will to repeat such a feat has been dormant but thanks to NASA, SpaceX, and other private and government entities it may be coming back.

There are people living in the most inhospitable places on earth. Their methods of adaptation with primitive technology are absolutely amazing. Then to state that we, with our present technology, cannot live on Mars? That is just silly.

These people should climb a tree as they have no faith in humanity. WE can build in caves, etc. The resources of space are limitless.

We're running out of rare metals to build things with.

Of course, if not this then I'll support orion!

Here's one assessment of why the proposed one-way trips to settle Mars wouldn't work.

Assessment of the technical feasibility of the proposed Mars One mission

Politico is right, if a bit strident. Our rocket tech can't get anything close to the required payloads to Mars to set up a settlement. Our current tech couldn't even get people to the Martian surface and back. Platitudes about the spirit of humanity won't change that.

But we could get to Phobos and back.

We can go back to our moon. And start building a moonbase.

When we get the moonbase right, we could use that knowledge to build Phobos base.

We need more orbital stations around earth and at the Lagrange points.

If you start from earth orbit, supply runs to Phobos can be done with lightsail ships. It would take several years, so those wouldn't carry people, but it's way cheaper than rockets. Rockets would be reserved for carrying people.

Earth needs some railgun mass launchers to get bulk goods into orbit much more cheaply. Again, no people. Because it would squish them.

And from Phobos base, we could get to Mars.

It will happen. Just probably not in our lifetimes. Baby steps, and each baby step takes time.

First, we got to be willing to take the baby steps. Too many people outright oppose even trying and that is a scary thought for humanity.

I am sure we could build the planetary class ship to make those baby steps a lot quicker.

Your plan does make more sense Mamooth than straight to mars.
