On The Flip Side of Hollywood

Yeah  Nukes aside I think she was referring to the much less occurance of societal decay, people were more innocent then in a way maybe a bit more civil and moral. I guess every generation feels that way though.
ya know what? I think I'd rather be scared of "nukes" or evil Russia than what I'm scared of today...kidnappers, rapists, drugs, driving fatalities, MTV, Madonna, etc. The fact is, the threat of nukes, even then, was remote and not an everyday occurence.

there are real, everyday occurence of the things I'm afraid of.

Moi, don't know if it pertains everywhere, but my bro is now deputy chief of police in a rather large Chicago suburb, where we grew up. I asked him about that, noting that we had run of the whole town, while my kids were in organized activities or with me! He said that stats on rape/kidnapping were the same as when we were small in the 60's, just publicized more.

Depends on how you read the stats. The fact is, the rate is the same (as in 1 out of 100) but there are a whole lot more 100's out there...and I live in the urban areas where it's more prevalent.

don't get me wrong, I know it's remote but that'll be cold comfort if it happens. I grew up when your parents said - come home before the fireflies. I won't even let my son in the back yard alone.

Also, so much is becoming mundane these days...I just don't feel comfortablewith much of it...from pornography (which used to be practiced in private), promiscuity (which also sex was in private), drugs/drinking - now it's a "disease", etc.

but keep talking, because something, sometime's gotta make me feel better. It's raining here in NYC and I guess it's put me in a melancholy mood...always makes me think of stuff like this.

Hate to make you feel worse, but if you look up the categories of crimes and how they determine the severity, you will find things keep changing with politics.

What gets reported changes too.

I don't know how anyone can look at the docs and conclude anything useful anymore.

Information and sensory overload

God I hear you on the weather! Luckily for me it's a nice day, I'm way too weather sensitive! He is very good at stats, so I think he was able to compare apples and apples. With that said, there was no way I could let my kids go as we were able, as I'd look negligent! Sure that's only gotten worse.

My concern those years ago, where do kids learn to think for themselves? A bit at a time? They never seemed to get that you COULD play baseball with 5 or 8 kids. They didn't know how to 'entertain' themselves, without direction-I wouldn't let them watch tv, avoiding some of your problems, though that's only gotten worse.

We can't stop 'progress', but sometimes we do need to address these types of 'other problems'. Eventually we did summers at a country place. Adults in house, kids outside. It helped! Yes, bad things could have happened, but didn't. We have to take the risk to give our children wings!
