It's a 9 nation EU-financed project.
Old tyres, which mostly are dumped into landscape, are turned into silicon carbide, which sells for 10,000$ a tonne.

Also 6 KiloWatt energy are extracted by 1 Kilogram old tyres. Which is same energy efficiency as coal. 6 Kilowatt can power 2 flats of a building (the scientist in podcast explains).

About 242 million tyres are discarded each year in USA.
7% are recycled, 11% burned, 5% exported.
Rest is filled into landscape.
