And the republicans paid dearly

If the Democrats elect NOT to sign the bill, it will cost them politically. More so, than the backlash they will receive for signing it.

Obama stood his ground in 2013. Went right at the things which made the Republicans look bad for not approving the spending bill. Obama ensured National Monuments in DC were shutdown. Obama really knew how to play dirty....... And it worked..... The Republicans caved and finally approved the bill. In full disclosure, that is when I fired the Republican Party in writing.

The Democrats need to be careful here and not overplay their hand

But the comparison to 2013 is very similar except having the issue being related to Obamacare, in 2018 its over National Security.

The shutdown sent Republican poll ratings plunging, cost the government billions of dollars and damaged the nation’s international credibility. Mr. Obama refused to compromise, leaving Republican leaders to beg him to talk, and to fulminate when he refused. For all that, Republicans got a slight tightening of income verification rules for Americans accessing new health insurance exchanges created by the Affordable Care Act.

Obama refused to sign the bill initially because it lacked funding for Obamacare

Trump was born. Many a republican fired them for caving to Obama. Republicans lack the nads the Democrats have. I contest that in 2013 was when the Republican Party was fractured. And that is why 12 of them were mowed down by Trump in the primaries

The Pubs took the senate in 2014, the shutdown was much ado about nothing.

Taking the Senate in off years often go to the party that is not in the Oval office

If they had stood their ground, we could of nailed the coffin shut on Obamacare much earlier

Agreed or they would have stood their ground in 2013. Which is why the party is screwed. Trump is getting it done without them though.

Shutdown is the only way Republicans know to pass legislation

Compromise is out of the question

That is what he did when he signed the Omnibus previously. They compromised. Now it's time for the Democrats to do the right thing by curtailing illegal immigration. The return on investment is justification
