People should expect to see the calorie information posted on five million vending machines nationwide in 2014.

As part of the changes on U.S President Barack Obama updated health care law, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) will start requiring vending machines to display calorie information which will aid consumers to make healthier food choices.

Office workers looking for snacks will be counting not only their change but also the number of calories found in their purchases. The final rules on the new labeling regulations meant for vending machines are scheduled to be released early next year.

The new ruling has estimated that it will initially cost the vending machine industry the amount of $25.8 million and an additional $24 million every year onwards. However, it will also make .02 percent of obese adults consume 100 lesser calories every week which will bring huge savings to the health care system

The rules will be applicable to around 10,800 companies that are operating 20 or even more of these vending machines. Almost 75 percent of such companies employ three or fewer workers.

Eric Dell, vice president of National Automatic Merchandising Association, told the Daily Herald that the new ruling will not be easy to roll out. Initially investing $2,400 with an additional $2,200 spending in every year for the calorie information posters does not entail a return on investment.

I don't read the stuff that's on the machines now. What makes the Big Dummy think I'll read the calorie crap?? :dunno:

Nutritional information is already on the packaging of whatever it is. There's no need for more, unless the object is to stop selling any food item in vending machines.

If someone won't read the calorie count on the packaging, what makes people think they'll read it on the machine itself? Besides, being healthy is your responsibility. Just another Obama, socialist, abandon-personal-responsibility plan.

People that are health-concious don't frequent vending machines unless they have apples in them. If something I was going to buy had 5,000 calories written on the package, and I couldn't see the writing due to the position of the item in the machine, I'd buy it anyway. Then, not wanting to waste money, I'd eat it regardless. Why can't they just put a label on the machine itself like they do cigarettes? Don't allow people under 18 to buy from the machine or shall we make it 21?? :) Does this label have to be in Spanish also? Some items I've seen will tell you how many calories per serving. "Most" won't realize there are ten servings in the bag. :) Maybe put a sign on the machine that is a silhouette of a fat person surrounded by a circle with a line through it. This smells of Bloomberg the Super Nanny!

more idiocy of a nanny state

if somebody is buying from the vending machine they either already know the stuff is high in calories or they do not care anyway.

Because posting this info has led to people being thinner and healthier, right? Oh yeah.

No, because some of us are diabetic and some others have health problems they need to monitor.

As much as I hate the nanny-state, things like this aren't really that far out of line.

I want to know what I'm putting in my body. And I think that the people who make these products ought to know what's in them as well

Packages have been labeled for years. The only people who read them are those who are actually counting the calories, cholesterol or sugar that they eat and the odds of those people going to vending machines are slim.

If anyone is wondering whether processed foods, like cookies, are healthy, then they are too stupid to have it explained to them. Maybe for those folks, the government could just come up with little symbols, like smiley faces or frowny faces. Maybe that way, the hopeless consumers who totally rely on government for everything can understand that the package of Oreos with the frowny face isn't good for them.

This isn't about helping people. It's another burden to place on businesses that will do little in the effort to make people healthy. Of course, they know that, but it's a chance to sock it to the wealthy businesses yet again. And they'll continue with talks to just ban foods since they know that's the only way to make people stop eating certain things, well, at least until the black market expands to cover chips and cookies.

People should pay attention to what they eat, but labels on foods haven't caused a lot of people to change their habits. If they don't read the package they hold in their hand, why the hell would anyone read the fine print on signs on the vending machines? They won't!!

At some point, liberals should concede that common sense is what prompts people to make good decisions. We all learned about the food groups in kindergarten. Anyone with half a brain knows that processed food has preservatives and loads of sodium and sugar. That is why we have called stuff "junk food" for as long as I can remember, and I've been around a while.

I know a lot of kids now are battling with weight problems, as are their parents. Couldn't be because they get free breakfasts and lunches at school, get a backpack of food sent home with them for dinner and then their parents gets food stamps and WIC, could it? A poll showed that many children were eating two breakfasts every day. And since EBT cards can purchase junk food and even cigarettes, that likely makes the problems worse.

The government allows the purchase of junk food and fast food with EBT cards and somehow thinks labels will stop people from purchasing the fatty foods. Are they fucking serious? Seems that the government is trying to undo their own mistake. They made it worse and now offer yet another government solution designed to fix the government mistake.

Maybe if people had to actually think for themselves instead of letting politicians do it for them, we'd all be better off.

The food packages are already labeled. That should be good enough if a person is even mildly interested in what they are putting in their mouth. If they don't know something is junk before they put the money in the machine and push the buttons, I doubt we can help them.

Funny how the administration doesn't want people to be informed when it comes to what they are doing. "We have to pass it before we can see what's in it." There are millions of government regulations that the average person can't begin to understand, yet there are severe penalties for not following them. Ignorance of the law is no excuse. If they want to get serious about disclosure, then they should start with themselves. How about truth in labeling when they pass legislation? The long term damage caused by ignorant politicians affects everyone no matter how informed people are.

Common sense works when choosing food. It doesn't work when trying to figure out government mindset.
