Obama will attend India's Republic Day Ceremony on January 26th. He will become the first U.S. president to have this honor.

U.S. President Barack Obama will visit India in late January to take part in the nation's Republic Day celebration and meet with Indian Prime Minister Narenda Modi, the White House announced Friday.

Obama is making the trip at the invitation of Modi and will participate in the Indian Republic Day celebration in New Delhi, "which commemorates the adoption of India's constitution" in 1950, the White House said in a communique.

The White House press secretary said that "this visit will mark the first time a U.S. president will have the honor of attending Republic Day" in India.

Obama will also "meet with the Prime Minister and Indian officials to strengthen and expand the U.S.-India strategic partnership," according to the White House.

Modi visited the White House last September and agreed with Obama on a new agenda that makes bilateral relations a priority and outlines several specific goals in the fields of the economy, energy and security.

During their meeting in the Oval Office, Obama and Modi stressed bilateral trade, now five times greater than in 2001 and amounting to almost $100 billion a year. They pledged to take the necessary steps to quintuplicate bilateral trade once again.

Though they did not establish a date for closing the bilateral investment accord, they agreed on an investment initiative led by their respective treasuries and particularly focused on financing infrastructures, with two U.S. missions scheduled to visit India in 2015. EFE
