(CNSNews.com) - The information superhighway is heading straight into taxpayer-subsidized housing.

The Department of Housing and Urban Development on Wednesday announced an initiative to extend affordable broadband access to families living in HUD-assisted housing.

The project, launching in 27 cities and one tribal nation, is called ConnectHome. (President Obama planned to discuss ConnectHome later Wednesday at the Choctaw Indian reservation in Oklahoma.)

Internet Service Providers, non-profits and the private sector will arrange broadband access as well as technical training, digital literacy programs, and devices for residents in public housing units.

You think your Cable bills are high now. get ready. just like OscamCare Premiums are going sky high.

and the ones it's hurting: the middle class

Who cares about the white privileged middle class. Bastards need to pay their share, having enjoyed their "free" ride on the cracker express for so long while their black compatriots suffered the tribulations of poverty hell.

That's not new. It's already being done in many areas.

He would do better to first teach them to read so they could use it properly.

??? You told us you live off government benefits, and you are whining about others ?

Luckily, it isn't free to the households
The US government has been actively seeking ways to connect more low-income households to the Web. In June, the Federal Communications Commission voted to advance a proposal that would allow qualifying households to use their $9.25-per-month Lifeline subsidy on either phone or broadband service.

and it's being subsidised by private firms

For its ConnectHome program, the US government is partnering with several organizations in the private and public sectors. Google Fiber, for instance, will provide free monthly home Internet service to select public housing communities in Atlanta, Durham, North Carolina, Kansas City, Missouri and Nashville. Another provider, CenturyLink, is offering broadband service to HUD households in Seattle for $9.95 for the first year, increasing that monthly rate to $14.95 in the next four years. Cox Communications and Sprint, among others, will also participate.

Other companies and organizations will offer add-on services. Big-box retailer Best Buy, for instance, will provide computer training and technical support to HUD residents. The James M. Cox Foundation, a not-for-profit associated with Internet service provider Cox Communications, will provide 1,500 tabletsat $30 each to students and their families in Macon, Georgia. The open-source project GitHub is offering $250,000 to help with "digital literacy," Public Broadcasting Service will produce new content for children and the American Library Association will provide on-site training.

What a generous initiative by those private companies.
Good on the government for pulling it all together.
A great example of the public and private sectors working together for the benefit of the community and country.

Well spotted Stephanie.

I'm sure the Conservatives in Abraham Lincoln's day said the same thing after Lincoln fought for and passed federal grants to the developers of the Trans Continental railroad. Roosevelt got it when his administration got the TVA up and running, bringing electricity to the mid South. Eisenhower heard from the spending hawks the day he signed the Interstate Highway bill.

But all that infrastructure built this nation. Internet access, especially for Public Housing tenants will pay for itself. First, contracts have to be let to install equipment and lines. Then those private contractors will hire more employees for the task. And finally, the tenants will be served by the Housing Authorities more efficiently and, therefore, more cost effectively.

Would you be in the gaggle screaming about the TVA in the 1930s? Would you complain about "giving" electricity to hillbillies and hicks? Because you seem to be having more sick fun dumping on public housing tenants than anything else.
