I think you miss the point. The Iranians were perfectly happy to have a western style Democracy in 1953. Instead the CIA and British Petroleum thought the Prime Minister who wanted to do this was a "communist", and we supported a coup to put the Shah back into power after he had been deposed. For the next 25 years, the Shah murdered anyone he considered a threat except for the Clergy, because had he gone after them, there'd have been hell to pay.
