'You're a traitor, you allowed foreign boots on our soil telling our military -- in this case the coastguard -- what they can and could not do, and telling us, the citizens of the United States, what we could or could not do'."

Fact is that republicans controlled the congress and chose to do NOTHING. They had the majority and didn't even send a bill to the floor for a vote so how can you blame democrats??

There was even a youtube video that was produced after dems took the majority in 2006 with cut and spliced clips of dems claiming that things were "ok" back in 2003 and 2004 but it was republicans who were in charge until 2006 and chose to do NOTHING. In that clip the right tries to hold then majority committee chairman accountable for the inaction of the congress back in 2003 and 2004 when he was in the minority.
