Obama blames 'structural' design of Congress for gridlock - Washington Times

President Obama is taking a swipe at the Founding Fathers, blaming his inability to move his agenda on the “disadvantage” of having each state represented equally in the Senate.

At a Democratic fundraiser in Chicago Thursday night, Mr. Obama told a small group of wealthy supporters that there are several hurdles to keeping Democrats in control of the Senate and recapturing the House. One of those problems, he said, is the apportionment of two Senate seats to each state regardless of population.

“Obviously, the nature of the Senate means that California has the same number of Senate seats as Wyoming. That puts us at a disadvantage,” Mr. Obama said.

The Founding Fathers decided in the “Great Compromise” in 1787 to apportion House seats based on population and give each state two seats in the Senate regardless of population. The solution was a compromise between large states and small states in a dispute that nearly dissolved the Constitutional Convention.

Let us watch the sheep on the left clap and say........................."Yeah, they were slave owners too!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

This is the worst president ever, it is not close.

Yep.

That pretty much is screwed up.

No idea when anyone thinks states with a population of 600,000 should have the same weight as states with populations 20,000,000.

Same with the Electoral College.

2 very undemocratic processes in the Constitution.
Because the Senate is not a body of government that is supposed to represent the people. Duh....

Each state is equal and as such, has equal representation in the Senate, which is supposed to represent the States interests, not the peoples.
Indeed. And the same reason there is the Electoral College.

In any case? The Senate was supposed to represent the interest of the States (and why the Senators were appointed by the State legislatures), and the House was to represent the people.

The progressives screwed all that up 100 years ago with the 17th Amendment.

Is it any wonder why Obama has had his records sealed?

It just shows his disdain for the Constitution. Nothing new, as he picks and chooses which laws to enforce and which ones NOT TO ENFORCE.

What he wants is a PURE DEMOCRACY............which many on this board from the left want for America. The Senate was DESIGNED to be the COOLER. To be slow and precise to ensure that Stupid Laws don't get passed in the heat of the moment.

They were designed to be the arm of the State Legislatures who would have a better knowledge of how these laws effect the State if passed. A higher knowledge of Complex laws than the average citizen.

When we passed the 17th, we hosed the Republic, and people like Obama have no respect for the Republic whatsoever.

They don't believe or understand what separation of powers means. They do not want a democracy. They want a strong federal government to feed them, take care of them, tell them where they can shit and what they can use to wipe their ass (literally, look up eco-toilet paper,) all from the cradle to the grave.

That is not democracy. That is a liberal utopia.

It borders on Feudalism........

Feudalism....... ???

i see it as more related to Neanderthalism ........ :lmao:

personally i look upon ALL libs as a bit slopeheaded. .... .... :lmao:

Aaaaand the hypocrite still carries on about turning men into gods.

So says an asshole who probably has a Che T shirt.

Hey everyone, you think this person knows or cares about how the transatlantic slave trade started? You think he knows or cares that the first slave owner in this country was black (ooops African American.).

Hey everyone, you think this asshole knows or cares that slavery exists today in the form of horrific working conditions in Vietnam or China etc etc?

He does? Well, I wonder if those black athletes that receive millions in endorsements from companies like Nike who manufactures their products in those places will give back their millions in order to stand up against "slavery." Yeah, pretty different when the shoe is on the other foot, isn't it?

We all know from his name "occupy" that he does not pay his own bills, lives in his parents house, is some kind of trust fund baby, and his absolutely clueless about REAL LIFE.

But let us watch him continue on with the hypocritical blather of lefty righteousness. Which, shifts like the sands of Egypt in order to fit what ever argument they are making at the time.
That's some awesome hyperbole there but ALL your guesses about me in your shitty personal attack are dead wrong, try again or better yet, quit acting like a true believer who just encountered a shameless heretic.

A stereotyper who hates being steretyped.

He says I am dead wrong about everything. Is he denying he is one of those typical hippy scumbag occupy wall street morons? Who, in fact are precisely what I described based everything I have seen out of these occupy scumbags.

Occupy!

This was not a concern of the President when he ran for and won Senate in 2004, when Democrats took the Senate in 2006, 2008, 2010, and 2012. Why and how is this being voiced by the President in 2014? Even if Republicans take the Senate in 2014, The President and the Democrats will have benefitted from the Founding Fathers vision more so than the Republicans when it comes to the Senate. A simple Thank You would be more appropriate vs. a smear and attack because one may not get his way.

The president's comments show no "disdain" for the Constitution. Rather, his comments were intended to explain the difficulty in obtaining a fair representation in the Senate of an electoral group that tends to concentrate in high-density urban environs. It is a basic observation and Obama is certainly not the first person to make it.

Obama has never, to my knowledge, expressed any desire for a pure democracy or criticized the design of our Republic. Additionally, the 17th Amendment made no change to the manner or the accuracy with which the Senate represented high density urban groups.

The Senate's status as a more seasoned, mature and deliberative body rests on it's longer terms, it's lower numbers and that each of its members represents the electorate of an entire state. This latter point, hopefully, tends to make the Senate's members better aligned with the needs and wants of the states they represent. But there is nothing in the Constitution's defining structure of the Senate which ensures Senators have any "better knowledge" of how laws affect states; either before or after the 17th was put into effect.

Actions speak louder than words, and his actions over his presidency show his true purpose.

He has picked and chose the laws he wishes to enforce or not enforce.
Under his leadership the IRS has targeted Groups that don't toe his ideology.

Democrats use the words Democracy all the time, and their stances are usually right in line with a PURE DEMOCRACY.

The Senate was intended to be the voice of the State Legislature. If the FF's wanted a pure democracy they wouldn't have created a Senate at all. The House of Representatives is the area intended to be by popular vote.

It was another Check and Balance on the Fed. Intended to give the State's a voice in the Fed. The average person doesn't know the effects of laws by the Fed, but the State legislatures who must comply have to know this as they must implement these laws in their state. They are by nature better informed than the average Joe in the State, so they may object to a Senator voting on a BS law. If that Senator refuses to abide by the will of that State and go his own way, he would be Recalled and replaced. Under that system, Senators would be very careful not to go against the will of the States. That protection is gone because of the 17th.

The people would still elect local representatives to make these decisions. The Founding Fathers preached AS LOCAL AS POSSIBLE. Why? Because local people can ID a local Dirt Bag easier than one from the other side of the State that they know nothing about.

who he ??

In the name of equality and to correct the horrible wrong done by the Founding Fathers, Obama should dissolve the present states, create new ones, with equal population, even it would mean to transplant thousands of people to Wyoming, Alaska and some lucky ones, to Hawaii. And, of course, be mindful of racial mix, as well.

What a pathetic loser!

Naw.

Actually it would be nice to have a government more representative of the interest of the Majority of Americans.

Maybe he thought the republicans would not resort to economic sabotage and hostage tactics and had an actual interest in the well being of our country and All of it's people. Guess you guys showed him what conservatives really value.

To whom?

Personally? I've always thought the Senate was undemocratic and mirrored the "House of Lords".

It was even moreso before the 17th Amendment.

At least after that they actually had to win the vote.
