Now Obama blames the internet for job losses

Well, I call bullshit... many people did not move on to better jobs... they moved to the unemployment line.
And, this situation - technology making folks unemployed - only just started since January 2009, right?

Didn't say it started then... but combine that with the OUTSOURCING that has taken place that serves as a money grab by huge corporations... and the results of the combination of the two is the current situation.

OK. So, we agree it didn't start then.

So, why is Obama claiming THIS is the reason for unemployment being so horrendous?

That's my point. This phenomenon of tech changing job situations is nothing new, but the O blames THAT?

Can he accept responsibility for anything, I wonder.

Just becuase Obama siad it, doesnt make it not true.

It is 100% true...and has been a trend for many years....but is becoming more obvious now.

Fromn 2000 (when the internet started to become a household tool) through 2007, we were experiencing what was deemed as propseprous times. Now, whther or not it was truly prosperous is not relevant....companies were growing, people were spending money, homes were being bought, etc....yet....there was not a significant growth in jobs.

Why was that?

Becuase of the internet and other computerized technology. We just didnt notice it becuase there was not a decrease in jobs either

Now that we are not in prosperous times, we are noticing how the internet is affecting the job market.

To think that technology doesnt affect the job market is foolish...technology is designed to make a job more efficient and easier to accomplish...meaning less people needed to perform the jobs

And that's the reason unemployment is high? Nothing to do with the economy, our credit drop, etc.?

Actually...there is plenty he can accept responsibilkity for as it pertains to the job market.

First and foremost...why did he not know ahead of time that the internet was affecting the job market. Instead, he siad we can fix it with a trillion dollar stimulus.

So my question is.....what the hell has his economic team been doing if they didnt see this to begin with?

If anyone actually watched or read his speech, you'd realize he was talking about the last few decades.

For this, Roosevelt was called a radical, a socialist, even a communist. But today, we are a richer nation and a stronger democracy because of what he fought for in his last campaign: an eight hour work day and a minimum wage for women; insurance for the unemployed, the elderly, and those with disabilities; political reform and a progressive income tax.

Today, over one hundred years later, our economy has gone through another transformation. Over the last few decades, huge advances in technology have allowed businesses to do more with less, and made it easier for them to set up shop and hire workers anywhere in the world. And many of you know firsthand the painful disruptions this has caused for a lot of Americans.

Factories where people thought they would retire suddenly picked up and went overseas, where the workers were cheaper. Steel mills that needed 1,000 employees are now able to do the same work with 100, so that layoffs were too often permanent, not just a temporary part of the business cycle. These changes didn’t just affect blue-collar workers. If you were a bank teller or a phone operator or a travel agent, you saw many in your profession replaced by ATMs or the internet. Today, even higher-skilled jobs like accountants and middle management can be outsourced to countries like China and India. And if you’re someone whose job can be done cheaper by a computer or someone in another country, you don’t have a lot of leverage with your employer when it comes to asking for better wages and benefits – especially since fewer Americans today are part of a union.

Lots of stupid people on this thread.

No...that is the reason we are struggling to get the unemployment back to acceptable numbers despite the markets doing fairly well.

You see...during the downturn...people were layed off.

And when business picked up a little, they realized that the ones they laid off actually were not even needed to begin with. Companies realized they were overstaffed to begin with and not completely capitalizing on the efficiency of technology.

SO no reason to hire people back with an uptick in business.

An example.....a company had 2 receptionists....during the recession, one was laid off...and for 2 years they have been using one recptionist....

And now that the phones are busier again, the company is realizing that with voice mail, they never really needed two recptionists to begin with.

 He is still taking no responsibility. And, the idea that there are fewer union employees is another transfer of responsibility.

That's the point, braintrust.

While I agree that he is not a good President - he is dead on with this one.
Internet and computerization/technology has caused far more job losses than it has created.

It seems as though many of your contemporaries will accept nothing except big bad Obama as the reason for anything that goes wrong. Even for stuff that happened before he was around.

Consistently transferring blame in lieu of accepting it and talking about solutions is not a leadership quality.

At the very least, he should have blamed Al Gore for inventing the internet. ;)

Yeah...he could go out and pick a fight with Iran or something. Another 5,000 young Americans dead, 32,000+ seriously wounded and another trillion dollars...'course spread out over ten years that wouldn't be too bad. Blackwater and Halliburton have to eat too.

Really? I guess you voted for McCain, then.

That is spin of the truth.

We did not think Obama can do what he claimed he can do during the campaign.
However, 56% of the people believed he could...so he won the election.

Since then he has noit only NOT done much of what he said he would do, but he is refusing to accept blame for not doing what he promised.

Every candidate knew the other party would be an issue in completing tasks....but he assured America he will be able to create a bi partisan atmoshere.....and he couldnt.

So what is he doing? Blamiung the other party. Is it the other party's fault? Perhaps. But it was not the other party who assured America that they would be able to create a bi partisan atmospohere. Obama was the one who made that claim.

He assured us he would straighten out the economy in his first term..and even admitted he was a one termer if he didnt.. Did we think he could? Me? I saw our economic issues far too severe for one to make that promise. But he made that promise.

And now that he hasnt done what he promised? He is blaming outside forces.....but we all knew outside forces would be an issue.....but we didnt make that promise...he did.

So yes...he blames everyone and everything else for not beiung able to keep his promises.

Did he truly think it was going to be easy? Is he truly surprised at the factors preventing him from doing what he set out to do?

That wasn't directed at you Jarhead. You, like me, appear flabbergasted at how dumb Lovebears is.

ROTF. Another slow hate day? Blame is used yet the President didn't "Blame" anyone or thing. Another fine example of how the specious right wing echo chamber parrots useless drivel to their followers.
It's not hate. Too many are weary of his lame excuses. One would think that the man in the most responsible position there is would actually accept some of that responsibility.

It's channelled hatred for the man. Not only that but to claim he blamed the internet for job loss in that speech indicates a lack comprehension skills, or they are just parroting what they've heard from the radio heads......

I do not see her as dumb. I disagree with her and agree 100% with Obama as it pertains to the internet costing jobs. It did, it still does, and it will for years to come.

Voice mail cost jobs to never be replaced.
Email did as well
Word processing did.
Bollean searches did...no more need for a 20 person research department.

Heck...I can go on and on.

But I agree with one thing...for Obama to act "surprised" at this is disturbing. He has a team of economists...and they never once reviewed the employment stats that showed people being replaced by technology? Now? 2 years later and a trillion dollars later? Now is when they say....oopsie, we didnt realize?

Are you aware he has gone from

the economy was worse than we thought
to
the shovel ready jobs werent shovel ready enough
to
the repuiblicans are getting in my way
to
the internet is partially to blame

So i say....

100 top economists on your team and no one knew the economy was worse than you thought?
to
You were the one who assured us the shovel ready jobs were shovel ready
to
did you truly think the GOP was going to make life easy for you?
to
100 top economists on your team and no one knew the internet has been costing jobs for years?
