The Nagoya Grand Sumo Tournament began today. No big surprises or upsets so far. If hakuho wins again it will be his 30th tournament victory, putting him in rare company indeed.

Found one with English commentary and everything!

Osunaarashi has a hill to climb this tournament, coming as it does, during Ramadan. He's got some issues with his knees and ankles, so fasting on top of that is not ideal for this kind of grueling tournament. But he seems like a tough kid, so we'll see.

Well, the tournament wrapped up a few days ago and it was a barn-burner. Going into the last day of action no fewer than 4 rikishi had a mathematical chance at the title. That is very rarely the case. As it turns out, Yokozuna Hakuho won yet again, making it a total of 30 top-level tournaments he has won. This puts him in a class with the elite of the elite. Only two others have ever reached that number, and at just 29 years old Hakuho has a real shot at taking the all-time record for tournaments won.

As a result of his strong showing in this and the two previous basho, Goedo will now be promoted to Ozeki. Osunaarashi made a big statement for himself this tournament, and looks to be one to watch in the near future for sure.

Also good news is that 12 out of the 15 days of the tournament were sold out, even in Nagoya where it gets crazy-hot during the summer. The popularity of the sport seems to be making a resurgence after taking a hit following the scandals of recent years.

Not a horrible showing at all by Osunaarashi, 7-8 your first time up above Mag#6 or so isn't anything to be sorry about. The two Kinboshi also are impressive.

Was Tochinoshin's performance good enough to get him back in the top Division?

And nice to see Goeido finally get Ozeki.

Yeah, noted ALOT of fanning going on out in the stands.
