Minnesota's state government began a broad shutdown on Friday going into the July 4 holiday weekend after the Democratic governor and Republican legislative leaders failed to agree on a budget.

Dayton vetoed the other spending proposals. He also vetoed Republican-backed bills to restrict abortions after 20 weeks of pregnancy and require voters to present photo identification at the polls similar to Republican efforts across the country.

Dayton's first budget proposal included an income tax increase on the wealthiest state residents and an expansion in overall spending. Republican leaders sought to prevent any spending increases.

In the latest talks, Republicans offered to raise $1 billion of revenue by delaying some payments to schools and issuing bonds for tobacco settlement money. Dayton offered to limit his tax hike to those earning over $1 million a year. Neither offer stuck.

A full 63% of Minnesotans support raising taxes on the wealthiest 2% in order to balance the budget. Only 32% want the Republican all-cuts plan. That’s a supermajority in favor of Dayton’s plan by a huge +31 margin.

This guy should run for POTUS after Obama's second term.

It can't happen here!

Whooooooooooooooooo
Could have imagined
That they would freak out
Somewhere
In Minnesota?

These R's got elected so someone had to have voted for them.

The part that I thought was amusing was that so many people polled think that someone else should pay more as long as those in the polled majority pay NO more.

I wonder what state the upper 2% will move to after this travesty is finally passed.

Maybe they can move to indiana to help run the companies that are moving from Illinois to Indiana.

We are coming to a tipping point at which the majority will vote to rob the rich and the rich will leave or just go on strike.

When the folks pulling the wagon stop pulling, the wagon stops.

I never in my life have been hired to work at a company owned by an impoverished, stupid guy.

How will penalizing the shakers and the movers for shaking and moving create more jobs?

If a certain action draws a penalty, that action will slow or stop. You are proposing the penalizing of the actions that produce profits and grow the economy. No profits means no no growth means no expansion means no added jobs.

They aren't increasing spending, Rs are slashing much needed programs and they want to slash SS and Medicare. They need to move on to job creation but they continue to create tax cuts for the wealthy, instead.

They are not helpful.
