There reason why this wasn't as much of a problem in the pre-internet days was because you needed massive infrastructure to transmit a message, printing presses, distribution, broadcast abilities. You had the freedom to say what you wanted, but you were also held accountable for the results of what you say - libel and slander laws, mob action.. which is why journalism developed the standards and practices it uses compared to the "Yellow Journalism" days..

Now any clown like Alex Jones or Richard Spenser can start a YouTube or Twitter channel and disperse shit...
