Prize-Winning Author Catherine Clinton Discusses Mary Todd Lincoln and Modern First Ladies
Its hard to walk the aisles of your local grocery store without seeing the face of Michelle Obama staring back at you. Not since Jackie Onassis has a First Lady graced the cover of fashion magazines as often as Mrs. Obama.
Only time will tell how history will ultimately view todays First Lady. Will she be remembered more for her fashion sense or her political sense? Is she more Jackie or Hillary?
Or how about Mary? Lincoln that is; an extremely well-educated, socio-politically engaged woman who was a fashionista in her own right. Now considered by many historians to be a tragic figure, Mrs. Lincoln may simply have been too outspoken, too strong and too passionate for her time.
In Mrs. Lincoln: A Life, biographer Catherine Clinton offers a reassessment of this complicated, controversial and in some ways misunderstood woman. Clinton makes the case that it is impossible to look at Abraham Lincolns achievements without acknowledging the integral contributions of his first lady.
Recently, Clinton joined CFIFs (Center for Individual Freedom) Renee Giachino to discuss her book, the comparisons between Mrs. Lincoln and her modern-day successors, and how press scrutiny impacts Americas impression of our first ladies.
